iPhone 3G Unlocked with SIM Card Adapter

As hackers get more sophisticated, the time it takes them to unlock devices such as the iPhone becomes shorter and shorter. Much as with DRM on CDs and DVDs, the question must be asked: are companies like AT&T and Apple simply hurting honest consumers in their quest to hang onto a monopoly?

Only 4 days after launch, the iPhone 3G has been unlocked using a special card that piggybacks to your SIM card. This fools the phone into thinking it’s using an official carrier.

Of course, the fact that the iPhone 2.0 software was jailbroken so quickly pretty much indicated hacks wouldn’t be too long in coming.

According to the one of the Brazilian hackers, Breno MacMasi:

Our procedure consist in using one SIM adapter to simulate a fake IMSI test card. Instead of the AT&T IMSI like in the universals.

If you happen to be able to speak Portuquese, you can enjoy this video of the hack demonstrated:

You can see on the back of the phone the CE mark, this is a European phone. The sim adapter on the 3g is different than the original, and chips capable of bypassing the protection are not yet available to the underground hacking scene.

This is likely an Italian or French phone, those are sold unlocked.

Ahhhg, you made me doubt myself so I had to go and research. At the following apple site you can find the list of supported countries for the iPhone.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1937

I was wrong about France, but Italy and Hong Kong do sell the iPhone carrier unlocked. You need to Activate it with a specific sim the first time, but after that you use any sim you want.

Again, look at the CE on the back of the phone, this moron didn’t think about that before making their little video.

    European (Italian) iPhone.

Hi everyone, i have a problem..

I want to buy the iPhone 3g in USA for after return in switzerland. Can i use the iphone 3g with a swiss SIM card ( sunrise) ?

  7. Shadow says:

john_ai: Sorry to say but you have two problems. 1) The iPhone is only sold to US residents, you’ll need to supply an address in the US to be able to purchase it.

And second, The iPhone as sold in the US is carrier locked and can’t be unlocked by any means at the moment. See my previous post for more info.

  16. CLARK says:

    Hello,
someone has tried that simcard unlock?
i’m italian, but i want to buy an iphone in switzerland because, although the italian iphone 3g is sim unlocked with all the sim, the price is too expansive (500 euro for the 8Gb). In switzerland (i wanna buy it with a switzerland friend) the iphone is sim locked but the prize is more convenient (330 euro for the 8 Gb).

    TY for the reply!
