Microsoft Extends XP Support for Low-Cost Desktops

In April Microsoft announced that Windows XP Home would be available for ULCPCs (Netbooks, UMPCs) for one year after the release of the next version of Windows (currently known as Windows 7), or June 30th, 2010, whichever is later. On Tuesday at Computex Microsoft extended that same support to so-called Nettops, or ultra-low-cost desktops.

In a press release, Steven Guggenheimer, corporate vice president of the Original Equipment Manufacturer Division at Microsoft said:

“Customers and partners have made it clear to us that they want Windows on their netbooks and nettops. We are committed to providing Windows solutions for these devices, helping to ensure a high-quality experience for both our partners and customers.”

I guess customers and partners haven’t managed to make it clear to Microsoft that people still want XP in general, and feel that it’s just fine, but oh, well.

While the press release is somewhat vague as to which Windows version they are talking about, it’s clear from the comments from Asus and mention of the Asus Eee PC that they are talking about XP. And, naturally, it’s also by the teeth-clenching thought of Vista on a Nettop.
