GTA IV Freezes Have Gamers Hot

Grand Theft Auto IV has created a frenzy of news stories, including

  • rave reviews
  • worries over an effect on Iron Man ticket sales
  • probable record sales
  • did I mention rave reviews?

Ah, but the one that has gamers hot under the collar: freezes.

Owners of both Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles are reporting freeze issues with the new game. The issue seems most prevalent on 60GB PS3s, however. A few random posts fron various forums around the Internet include this one (Xbox 360):

Mine keeps freezing in the opening scene. I cannot get past it. This definitately sucks.

and this one (Xbox 360):

This is incredibly annoying and odd, indeed.

I picked up the game the day it came out of course and got home and played for maybe 15 minutes when it froze. So I got freaked out (having just replaced my 2nd Xbox for RROD). I tried again, it froze maybe 20 minutes in the second time. So, I returned to EB Games (Gamestop) and got it replaced, hoping it would fix the problem. It didn’t!

Check out how many pages of responses are in this thread at Sony’s forums.

Some are complaining of cutscene freezes, others random freezes. The only workaround from Rockstar Games so far has been to delete all the game data and reinstall - but that’s not working for all.

We Say: Rockstar is starting to get a reputation for great games that have a tendency to freeze (Bully had this issue also).

Naturally it affects a minority of users, but for now, the only thing users can do is install and cross their fingers.

Bought this game for my son, could not intall it, kept freezing up. Returned it and got a new one…same thing. What’s up with that? Will replacing the game again help?
PS3 console that works well with all other games. Any suggestions?

I just got my copy yesterday for the ps3 and about twenty minutes into playing the game it caused my ps3 to get really hot and the fan just would not turn off….. I have played all my other games hours on end and even use it all the time to watch blu-ray movies and this has never happen. But when I put my new GTA IV into the game console and play it for longer then twenty minutes the fan turns on and I am afraid that it is going to burn up my system…… Is anyone else having this issue or am I the only one.?

Not sure that these issues are real or fabrications. We should all wait for a response from Rockstar relating to these “issues” before every media site decides to make this more than it really is. I bought GTA IV for my launch model PS3 and have not had any issues.

  11. Steve says:

Why do you only have written examples of 360 problems when it is well documented that this is predominantly a problem with 20 and 60 gig PS3s?

    Dudersnightmare says:

    Duder,

WTF is wrong with you? Someone responds that they are not having a problem and something is wrong with them.

Dundersnightmare, did you read what Roger wrote? He wrote that he thought the problems may have been fabrications. This despite all evidence to the contrary, so it is similar to what some have said about the holocaust, despite all evidence to the contrary.

the first day when I recieved GTA IV I installed my game into the xbox 360 console, the screen turned white and there was a message in chinese and on the top it said could not read disc, insert a xbox 360 game only. then i just reseted the system and it worked. but when i got about 15 mins into the game it froze, and it seems it only freezes when i interact with an object or person in the game, like when i shoot them or punch them or evn bump into something. has anybody else encountered this problem?

I just got my copy of GTA IV for the Xbox 360. I played for maybe ten minutes, I got in a car and tried to get used to the new driving controls. Next thing I know I had run over some civilians and gotten two stars. Fun! Then I crashed the car into the side of a building, one second later FREEZE!

Please tell me that I did not just spend sixty bucks plus shipping for another lemon like Army of Two.

I’ve been corresponding with Rockstar for 2. weeks now. Here is the latest. I have a 360.

    Hello Tim,
Tonight I got the disk is unreadable error twice & it froze up twice within 20 minutes of playing. I could tell it was going to crash….two of the times. First my cell phone would not come up….the second time I got incoherant jumble on several radio stations.
The very first time the I got the “dik is unreadable” message I had only been playing for 30 seconds.

I copied this from gamespot.com. Same issues as me……..

I am experiencing “Unreadable disc” errors with my copy of GTA IV They usually occur after about half an hour of play, though occasionally they occur as soon as startup. The problem has been getting progressively worse as I have advanced in the game.

I have tried the following things to correct the problem:
    - Restarting console
    - Moving console to a ventilated area
    - Playing without a memory device
    - Emptying hard drive cache
    - Deactivating Xbox Live
    - Changing PAL settings

The game disk is not scratched. None of the above tricks have worked. Since this is the only game I have had issues with I can only conclude that the product is defective or there are serious bugs within the game.

I love the game but man…THIS STINKS!!!!
    Thanks!!
    CJ

a little over one month after getting it the disc is fried.it looks like an old vinyl record with grooves.blockbuster won’t take it back but the guy there claims it’s killing 360s.
