My XPS 410 desktop was doing the same thing. I knew it was the Sigmatel drivers but also couldn't find a suitable driver upgrade. I then found this posting and it worked perfectly. Check it out...

I have a Dell XPS420 and the same sigmatel driver. I unintalled it, loading the windows audio drivers. removed evertyhing stwrt*.* from my system and still get no joy. An error '80073712' stops sp1 in its tracks ... and nothing seems able to solve the problem. SP1 won't tell me why it won't install. SP1 is badly designed.

I don't suggest you rush to upgrade just yet anyway, i am sure you will have heard about the 'bricked' computers, that were rendered useless by SP1 causing them to reboot and reboot endlessly. It is up to you, but i am going to wait, just to make sure MS irons out any (or at least most) crease.
