Whaat? Microsoft Releases Windows Vista SP1 for x64 Systems?

This has to be the most screwed-up Service Pack release I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen plenty of them. While Microsoft said SP1 has been released to manufacturing, it also said SP1 wouldn’t be sent to end users for six weeks. And it even pulled one of the prerequisite updates yesterday after issues with it. Yet today end users with 64-bit Vista installs are seeing SP1 in Windows Update.

(See above, click to enlarge).

There are reports all over the web and in forums as well. The question is: is this real or is someone at Microsoft saying “Oops” right about now?

People have installed the SP without (they say) an issue, but anyone installing this, sans an announcement by Microsoft, is taking a chance. And no, people have checked, the 32-bit SP1 is not on Windows Update, so don’t get your hopes up.

However, some users had to call support with installation issues, and they indicated the support personnel were “shocked” to hear about Vista SP1 being “out in the wild.”

It should be noted that the six-week delay was originally noted to be because of driver issues - perhaps since it’s hard to find drivers for 64-bit OSes in general, there aren’t enough to be an problem! (yeah, yeah, just kidding, I know the 64-bit driver front isn’t as bad as it once was) :-)
