Bleeding Edge TV 258: Mustek DV520HD video camera
If youre into High Definition technology, check out the DV520HD from Mustek. It records videos and photos in 1080i high def. This makes it easy to point-and-shoot, hook up to your entertainment system, and easily enjoy. You can now re-live those lovely vacation sunsets on your HDTV. Available this month for $199 USD, which isn’t bad for an ultra-portable high definition camera at the consumer level.

If you watch the drunken Rep demo the camera, you’ll notice that the port he claims is a USB is, in fact, NOT a USB port, by the virtue of its shape & connector configuration. There is NO mention of any internal storage of any kind, nor any expansion slots (like SD Cards). This product is destined to be a big seller at Target, Wal-mart and a host of other “fine technology” stores. What a piece of crap!!! If this is the type of “Bleeding Edge Technology” this site is going to report on, I’m done coming here!! Sheesh!!! I wouldn’t buy that piece of crap for my 13 year old daughter!!!!

The website (http://tinyurl.com/2glbzn) says that there is 46 mb of internal storage AND that the interface is USB2.0. It also has an SD card slot. Not only that, but the camera will work with systems running anything from W98 to Vista. Sounds pretty good to me. Just because something is inexpensive doesn’t make it bad. I’d like to give one a try.

Jeez, listen to the sour grapes from the guy who paid 300% more for a five year old design (I’m guessing)
Nothing like hindsight to give you that edgy “I got gypped” feeling. Same thing happens every time I see one gig DRAM memory drop $5 in price. I paid over $200 for 128Mb ram just a few years ago. Get over it.
These HD recorders continue to improve and shrink, this model is surprisingly smaller than my current model which is an Aiptek HD-GO (I know, not the same company, but the same tech) It sports the same quality in construction, the same consistant output quality.
My Cam cost just $140 just before Christmas 07, and gives me excellent playback IN HD!
Output files are in .mov format, which makes editing and portability less of a challenge than other “proprietary” formats.
If all you have to complain about is how cheap it looks, get used to the fact that the polished “designer look” on your $600+ HD camcorder only adds to the cost.
plus one little fact more:
if you destroy it, you -can- afford to replace it. not so with the $600 model…
sour grapes usually get better with age (as in wine)

Well Mikey, you guessed wrong - I don’t own a video camera at all, but I have evaluated other Mustek products and as I stated above - This product is destined to be a big seller at Target, Wal-mart and a host of other “fine technology” stores. What a piece of crap!!!
Best Buy no longer carries this crap brand, no doubt because they are crappily built, software/firmware challenged and just generally garbage products.
Translation: Mustek=Just plain Junk!
If you want a real video camera, buy one, not this piece of crap!

Lots of negative there, are you sure? It doesn’t even sound like you even tried to demo it out in the store…
I cannot understand how you can be such an authority, when by your own admission, you don’t own one and never will. Are you the standard “internet tough guy”, always ready to point out all shortcomings in order to draw attention away from your own problems? Here’s a little hint for your future product reviews;
DON’T DO ONE UNLESS YOU OWN ONE OR HAVE A SIMILAR DEVICE.
I don’t care that it will be a big seller at Target or Walmart. I REALLY don’t care that BestBuy stopped carrying it.
Whether a retailer carries a product or not is strictly a bottom line type thing (will we make gobs of money with this?)
and does not really relate to product quality.

Hey Mikey -
You and John Corliss ought to get together & mutually admire each others “valuable opinions” on products that you didn’t purchase either…
My point was that Mustek makes crap, that is why Best Buy doesn’t carry it anymore - most of their scanners were returned as defective, as were their 7″ screen DVD players… I was told as much by a store manager. I have attempted to use their products before and always ended up returning them because they didn’t (or not for very long) and I trying to save others from wasting their time and money. While they might appear to be a viable product, my experience(s) with Mustek products have always been negative, resulting in them being returned.
What is your experience with Mustek products?
