Web War on Scientology Hits the Wrong Target
By Michael Santo

It’s no secret that a war has broken out between a group of hackers calling themselves Anonymous and the Church of Scientology. However, it appears the first innocent casualty has fallen.
The group has subjected the Scientology servers with DDos (Distributed Denial-of-Service) attacks in what’s known as Project Chanology. The war was started in earnest when the Church forced sites to take down the creepy Tom Cruise video you may have heard of or seen.
Of course, all wars have collateral damage.
The Church of Scientology has hired Prolexic, a company that protects websites from DDOS attacks by publicly substituting a Prolexic server for the attacked server, filtering out the bad traffic and passing the “good” traffic to the real server.
Well, if you knew what the ip address of the real server was, you could bypass the substituted server and attack it directly. According to Wired, one of the moderators on 711chan.org, Splongcat, was given info from a friend about the server’s real address on Friday.
However, the info was wrong, and instead of targeting the COS server, the attack targeted the of Etty Hillesum Lyceum, a school in the Netherlands (students pictured above). Poor intelligence data, eh? Remind you of anything?
Once the mistake was discovered the word went out at the IRC chat room hosted on 711chan.org (currently down) and the school’s site recovered. Splongcat apologized for not doing due diligence and checking before signaling the attack.
If you’re interested, Anonymous’ video manifesto is on YouTube, and you can watch it below.

Lu says:
This is what happens if a handful of immature couch potatoes tries to conduct an “attack” which is nothing but an attempt to eradicate Freedom of Speech on the net.

Anonymous says:
Lu, you have no idea of what you’re talking about.
Scientology is famous for using both legal tactics and not-so-legal ones to supress any trace of criticism to their church they can find. Anonymous will make sure they don’t continue with those censorship politics. If you really want freedom of expression, side with Anonymous. And lurk moar the next time before opening your mouth.
OP, as usual, has gotten it wrong too. Anonymous is not a hacker group. Anonymous is not even a group in a true sense.
Anonymous is a self organizing group with no explicit power structure, it’s an emergent property of the chans and is based upon the actions of a vast number of people. You do not “join” Anonymous. If you support the ideals of Anonymous, you are an Anon.
Use google next time before believing what the news tell you.

/b/rother, surely you don’t expect people to look into what Anon may really be.
The war has begun and will not end until one side has become immobile. If that side is a Chan moar will rise in the fallen’s place. As it always has been.
As it always will be.
Anon never forgets.

Anonymous, I do know what I am talking about. Script kiddies with not much brain making censorship on the net “ok”. I am fighting for Freedom of Speech for a long time and you and your friends are paving the way for more restrictions, cybersquads and repression. I hope they’ll get you.

Lu’s a fool.
Anonymous has been the definition of freedom of speech on the interweb tubes for at least 100 years.

you have just entered the very heart, soul, and life force of the internet. this is a place beyond sanity, wild and untamed. there is nothing new here. “new” content on 4chan is not found; it is created from old material. every interesting, offensive, shocking, or debate inspiring topic you’ve seen elsewhere has been posted here ad infinitum. we are the reason for “not safe for work”. we are the anonymous army. cross us and you will fail. anonymous is everywhere. you depend on us every day. we bag your groceries, we fix your computers. anonymous sees you before you see him. sitting at desks around the world right now is a nameless, faceless, unforgiving mafia composed of the best of the best.
We are 4channers. the people devoid of any type of soul or conscience. products of cynicism and apathy, spreading those very sentiments daily. anonymous is the hardened war veteran of the internet. he does not forgive or forget. we have seen things that defy explanations. heard stories that would make any god-fearing, law abiding citizen empty their stomach where they stand. we have experienced them multiple times and eagerly await their return.
4chan is a place of sheer genius and utter stupidity, and there is often a thin line dividing the two. here you will see a state of mind that exists in most human beings, but is rarely if ever shown. this is a place where taboos do not exist. 4chan cannot simply be regarded as a simple website or imageboard. it is so much more than code. 4chan is alive and constantly changing. this is a subculture, a self-governing sect of the world. rich in history and foundation. to become a 4chan user is to speak a different language. to leave behind any methods of conventional thinking you once knew.
There are things here that you will not understand and things you never will understand. if you cannot accept this then GTFO now. because there is no turning back.
This is 4chan, this is /b/ ”

Pretend there is a bar or gauge if you will. The pressure that this measures goes up every time you see scat porn or a snuff film. Every time you are rick rolled or see the internet uncover yet another corporate/government scandal. After you go through another flame war or download another movie. After every won CS game and WC3 tourny. After every photoshopped pic of an elephant ass raping a child whose blood flies through the air to land on an animated gif in just the right way to make you laugh in that way that makes 90% of the god fearing people of this world cringe or scream in disgust. I AM the internet. We are the internet. We are the 10-30 year olds who were raised on this stuff. The bnet kiddies who are growing up to be your best and brightest. We are desensitized. Nothing is sacred. Nothing holds meaning. Chuck Palaniuk never could have guessed what would happen if we didnt break free from corporate America.
Fox news, there is a future scarier than Fight Club. Your country club loving, yacht owning, fag hating patrons just can’t imagine what they are facing…. you can’t imagine the power we possess. We own the networks. We own the world. We are cruel not because we hate but because we don’t care and the power that gives us is infinite….

Anonymous is a unorganized group of loosers with no explicit clue, it’s a fart in the wind and is based upon the actions
of a inadequate number of people. You do not “join” Anonymous. If you support
the ideals of Anonymous, you are a moron.

Hey Bob, if you can say that with certainty, you must know what those ideals are, right? Please amuse us greatly by attempting to explain them to everyone here. Try very very hard to be objective.

Unmasked says:
Lu: You’re a fool… Do your research, freedom of speech is being opressed by the “church” of scientology… Anonymous doesn’t have a problem with the beliefs in scientology, weird as they might be, the problem is with the dictatorial organisation that claims to be the only way to truly access those beliefs, an organisation that uses harassment, intimidation and abuse to achieve it’s ends, to silence it’s critics…. The only way to fight a power like that, hiding behind it’s ludicrous claims of religious status, is anonymously… To strike from the shadows, to attack from beyond their reach, because, with a group like the church of scientology, you can be damned sure that if they can reach you, they will……… You want to fight for freedom of speech? Stop wasting your voice protecting the oppressors just because you’re too blind or lazy to go out and actively do some real research.

exonymous says:
The ideals of Anonymous? anonymity, stupid! A sort of anonymity that allows at the same time, a radical erasing of personal identity and responsibility, yet at the same time empowers the person to express and satisfy all of his repressed urges. The goals of Anonymous? To assimilate all others into its insane hive mind. Its roots, appear to be in the resentment and boredom, and detachment that our civilization has bred in many people, especially the young. Personally, I don’t want any part of it.
