Windows XP SP3 Shows Noticeable Speed Increase: Report

Last week I wrote that testers reported that Windows Vista SP1, at least in Release Candidate (RC) form, is still somewhat of a slowpoke. Devil Mountain Software, the testers, have run their same tests on Windows XP SP3’s RC, and in this case, they’ve seen a 10% speedup from XP SP2 to SP3.

The test computer was a Dell XPS M1710 with 2GHz Core 2 Duo CPU, 1GB of RAM and nVidia GeForce Go 7900GS video. Tests were run using their OfficeBench Microsoft Office-based test script, the same as in the Vista test.

“Since SP3 was supposed to be mostly a bug-fix/patch consolidation release, the unexpected speed boost comes as a nice bonus,” Craig Barth, Devil Mountain’s CTO said. “In fact, XP SP3 is shaping up to be a ‘must-have’ update for the majority of users who are still running Redmond’s not-so-latest and greatest desktop OS.” Source: exo-blog

We Say: Is Windows Vista turning out to be more like Windows Me, one of Microsoft’s greatest OS failures, than anything else? The only real attraction for me has been DirectX 10. Aside from that, everything else appears incremental in appearance. Nice to have, but nothing I must have.

Since Forrester Research has noted that XP remains Vista’s biggest rival, what must Microsoft be thinking now?

The speed test showed that Vista was over twice as slow as XP. Maybe Windows 7 will have usable speed.

Maybe Microsoft is finally doing the right thing. I mean, most people can only take everybody hating you so long and then you straighten up.

I’m really looking forward to XP SP3, but am wondering if installing it is going to require formatting and reinstall from scratch.

A bittorrent XP Sp2 lite on a used machine will put any new Vista or XP machine to shame.
Maybe Microsoft hired a few hackers with common sense on the SP3 project?
But remember folks, Windows ME incorported the current almost useless Restore Point resource and memory hog which is turned off by gamers and tech type pundits today.
Streaming a custom Corporate CD desktop with bloat stripped for performance is do-able. Microsoft provides the tools and software for that TASK.

[…] The upcoming Windows XP SP3 provides a 10% speed boost over SP2, according to early benchmarks. This news makes a downgrade to Windows Vista even less attractive. […]

I wanted to like Vista, really I did! So when I decided to buy a new HP laptop, Vista Home Premium was the entry level choice. Out the box, the OS was quite sexy and I looked forward to impressing my associates. After all sorts of wifi and irksome ease of use issues, I looked at other options including returning the system or reverting to XP.

It was not easy to install XP as the SATA hard drive was not recognized until slipstreaming a new installation cd. But afterwards, it was like revisiting an old friend - the machine now feels like a wicked-fast 2G Core 2 machine that I had envisioned. With Vista, the system was like a dysfunctional model - gorgeous, but with lots of issues.

I look forward to XP SP3 - didn’t the venerable Win2000 (still installed on 3 of my machines) have 4 service packs?

John Corlis, No it doesnt require formatting your machine, it will be a basic update from Windows Website and then installs over the SP2 or SP1 that your running now. Wont even notice difference, unless you get a lil performance boost
