It’s been a long, long road, but mass production of the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) Foundation’s XO-1 laptop has finally begun. In a press release email I received, the OLPC Foundation stated that early Tuesday (local time), Taiwan’s Quanta Computer started producing the XO-1 in its new Changshu manufacturing center, two hours northwest of Shanghai.
Recently the OLPC Foundation recently received real orders from both Uruguay and Mongolia. Starting in less than a week, on November 12th, end users can buy the XO-1 through the OLPC Foundation’s Give 1, Get 1 Program.
“Today represents an important milestone in the evolution of the One Laptop per Child project,” said Nicholas Negroponte, founder and chairman of One Laptop per Child. “Against all the naysayers and thanks to great partners such as Quanta, we have developed and now manufactured the world’s most advanced and greenest laptop and one designed specifically to instill a passion for learning in children.” Source: OLPC Press Release
We Say: Nice to see some really progress being made, and that the production line is finally going.
