I totally agree that all phones should be unlocked. In lieu of that though, there's a more simple solution: DON'T BUY THE DA**ED THINGS UNLESS THEY ARE UNLOCKED!

Let me first say I'm a great fan of Apple products and I am also an investor in the company, and I don't own a phone nor am I a customer of AT&T. With that said I must say that I belive Apple to be making a really big blunder by angering many of its customer. One of the big reasons I left MS products was the corporate greed and arragance I saw. In this instance I see Apple falling into a similar trap. The outcome may be that the hackers might begin to act toward Apple as they are MS. I hope this does not happen but it is possible to get them on your bad side. My hope is that Apple will find a way to co exist with the hackers and AT&T. If you are paying attention Steve, I'm not amused by this blunder.
