Netscape’s Digg clone relaunches as Propeller

PropellerBy Michael Santo
Executive Editor, RealTechNewsLast week Netscape announced they were returning their news format to a more traditional one, while moving the social-networking type news to a different site. Last night there were hints the move was imminent, as the status emails sent out to users told them of their “Daily Activity Report from Propeller.” Today that new site launched.

If you go to Netscape, you now see something pretty much like the old Netscape site, prior to their social networking experiment. Go to Propeller and you see that social networking-type news site that was at Netscape yesterday.

Of course, no major change like this is without issues. For example, so far this morning I have been unable to log in. Or, if I did log in, as soon as I changed to a different page, I was logged out. I still see stories and comments being posted, so some are able to login, but not me. :-(

And, although they direct you to a community forum for help, there’s no Propeller board there … just a Netscape site board. Guess they forgot to update something.

I wouldn’t mind having access to an alternative to Digg, but as long as AOL continues to use frames, there is no way that I’ll be spending anytime on the site. It’s so annoying to have to click multiple times just to get to a source and as a blogger, I resent that AOL is using my content, but not sending people to my site. They may feel like having a “no frames” button is enough, but I think using frames to begin with is pretty slimy.

Anyone fed up with AOL treating them poorly should sign up with mixx.com. I just got an invite to their private beta, and its an awesome social news site. Such a better design than netscape or propeller or whatever they call it. I’m so over propeller, I’m now at mixx. Head over there and sign up!
