Yahoo gets social

Yahoo MashBy Michael Santo

Are you ready to social network, Yahoo-style? On Friday Yahoo started sending out invitations to Mash, its beta social networking site. Note that you will need an invitation to mash with the rest of us.

Mash is different from other social networks in that you can start profiles for your friends and “open” your own profile to friends you trust, according to the Mash blog. What that means, exactly, is still a bit unclear. You can also reportedly customize your profile or friends’ profiles with other apps, ala Facebook.

“One last note before you jump in: Mash is still pretty raw–there are bugs and we haven’t gotten to several of the features it really should have. We need to hear from you about where to focus our efforts,” writes Will Aldrich, the head of Mash. Source: News.com

We Say: If you need (and want) an invitation, check out my previous story here. But do we really need another social networking site? Will people switch from Facebook or MySpace? As is usual with one of these sorts of sites for the big aggregators of content (like Google or Yahoo), your Yahoo mail password will be used for the Mash site (assuming you don’t create a new account).

Building a social networking site need some creative thinkings. The centralized model need a total overhaul. Instead, a reverse-building process should be in place from the grassroot and up, simular to the process of how a society is coming together and formed. Well, as someone who’s actively avoided MySpace (it burns my eyes!) and Facebook, I might be open to a Yahoo! branded social networking site. Or maybe I should say I’d be more open. All these sites require a decent time commitment that’s hard to justify when there’s no real tangible utility to them. Unlike, say LinkedIn.
