Nokia Announces Massive Battery Recall

Nokia today announced a recall of 46 million (yes, million) of its BL-5C cell phone batteries, due to potential overheating. The batteries in question were manufactured by Matsushita (surprise!) between December 2005 and November 2006.
“While the occurrence in the BL-5C batteries produced by Matsushita in the time-period specified is very rare, for consumers wishing to do so, Nokia and Matsushita offer to replace any BL-5C battery subject to this product advisory,” Nokia said in a statement. Source: BetaNews
We Say: The recall affects a number of phones (listed on the Nokia recall site); you can determine if your battery needs replacing by entering the battery code here at the site. Note that the site has been very busy all day long.

Daniel says:
A lot of good their recall page is. The model # on the back of the battery is so small I can barely read it. And it’s near impossible to tell I from 1, or O from 0; looks like if I want to be sure, I do pass the BL-5C initial test, that I’ll need to invest in a magnifying glass.
To top it off, you can just enter 26 random characters and it will tell you you’re not part of the recall. Guess they don’t have a regex validation or anything set up that would check formatting/certain characters. Might make it easier to make sure you enter ed a valid number.

[…] Last month Nokia issued a massive battery recall, which we wrote about earlier. Unfortunately for this pregnant Indian woman, it didn’t include her battery, which was of a different series, and which exploded 10 minutes after she plugged it into the charger. The battery that exploded was, however from the firm’s BL-D3 series, and not from BL-5C that Nokia recalled a month ago, police said. […]

[…] We’ve all seen plenty of Li-ion battery problems and recalls, such as the massive recent Nokia cell phone battery recall, and all the Sony laptop battery recalls. Most of these involve things like overheating of the battery, which can lead to fire. I’ve never, to this point, heard of an MP3 player catching fire, though. […]
