Apple has already delivered the first update to the iPhone, version 1.01 … it’s centered around security holes in the Safari browser. In fact, it patches the hole Jimmy originally wrote about a few days ago.

The first iPhone update has arrived. And from the looks of it, the update–software 1.01, delivered by way of iTunes–focuses on patching security holes in the Safari Web browser. Apple has also released new versions of its Safari browser (now at version 3.03) for Windows and Mac.

On Howard Forums, where the update was first reported, most users performing the update reported everything went smoothly. The update is 7.1MB in size, and takes 10 minutes or less to complete. According to Apple, when the iPhone is docked, iTunes will present you with the option to install the update. Source: PC World

We Say: I must say, the integration of the iPhone with iTunes is impressive in that it makes upgrading the software on the phone a lot easier than on other smartphones or cell phones. None of this download the ROM upgrade as an app, run it etc. etc. to upgrade the phone. Or Hotsync or ActiveSync a patch over. Or whatever. Much simpler, just as with the iPod.

I’m also impressed with the speed of Apple’s response to the security vulnerabilities. Not fixing them … usually something like this has to be certified by the carrier, and getting it through that process so fast … even a minor fix can take quite some time to get past a carrier … is impressive.

On the other hand, some users have had some issues with the upgrade, losing their SMS messages, contacts, wallpaper, and other settings.
