Internet Radio to be Silenced in Protest Next Tuesday

By Michael Santo

Better bring your radio or CDs to work next Tuesday if you’re used to listening to radio on the Internet. This is all in protest of the royalty fee increases scheduled to go into effect on July 15th.

On June 26, thousands of webcasters will go silent and cut off the music in protest to the royalty rate increase by the Copyright Royalty Rate Board.

Some of the participants of this protest includes Yahoo, Rhapsody, MTV Online and Live 365. Source: 901AM.com

We Say: There are some big names in there, but a lot is at stake. There have been two bills have been introduced to lower the royalty fees, and it’s hoped the day of silence will draw attention from both listeners and Congress.

This is killing the goose that may, some day, lay the golden egg. This is an area that is trying to establish a foothold. Many of the small stations (colleges, for example) cannot afford the fees that are proposed. If you listen to Internet Broadcasts, or think you might at least have that option in the future, then please visit

It’s only radio, folks. Moreover, it’s only internet radio. There are far worse things to have moments of silence over.

Grow up already. If you’re in university, listen to your daps if you must. But come on. This is no tragedy.

This may hurt webcasters as people notice noone cares. I mean, if the public really cared, they’d pay webcasters enough to afford those rates.

Music is everywhere these days… It’s instantly accessible from a myriad of places. If all you do is stream it to me over the internet, then you’re not doing me much of a service.

As long as the internet radio stations are not paying more for content per listener than say…an FM radio station, or XM then who cares? If the music industry is charging internet radio more than the other outlets, then they may be engaging in predatory behavior. That would really tick me off.
