The Vatican Goes Green

Yes, indeed, it’s a definite move toward green as the roof of the Pope Paul VI auditorium will be replaced next year with solar panels, a reflection of Pope Benedict XVI’s concern about energy use and conservation.

The roof of the Paul VI auditorium will be redone next year, with its cement panels replaced with photovoltaic cells to convert sunlight into electricity, engineer Pier Carlo Cuscianna said.

The cells will produce enough electricity to illuminate, heat or cool the building, Cuscianna said. Source: Yahoo! News

We Say: Excess energy will be funneled into the rest of the building for their use. They are also considering replacing some other roofs, though not those of historic landmarks like St. Peter’s Basilica.
