Virginia Tech Online Game Generates Outrage

V-Tech RampageBy Michael Santo
Executive Editor, RealTechNews

… and well it should. It’s been said that Virginia Tech gunman Cho Seung-hui was disturbed and mentally ill. I will go so far, based on what I have read, to say the creator of this game fits in those same categories as well. (OK, maybe not the mentally ill part …) Yes, I went to one of the sites it’s hosted on to get a screenshot. No, I did not play it.

The creator of “V-Tech Rampage”, 21-year-old Ryan Lambourn, said he made the game “because it’s funny,” the Sydney Morning Herald reported Thursday.

The unemployed Lambourn responded to outraged calls for him to remove the game from the Internet by demanding 1,000 US dollars for each of the two sites it is on and said that for another 1,000 dollars he would apologise. Source: Yahoo! News

We Say: Naturally he now says it’s all a joke … but he still won’t take it down from the sites. This is the “We Say” section … but I’m speechless.

I mean, some people could argue “all’s fair in love and comedy”, and certainly some people make jokes about tragedy, usually to get over the grief of it (it’s certainly a very British thing to do).

However, demanding money to remove offensive content and apologising is completely wrong, has he no heart?

He’s a 21 year old. Obviously he’s never been touched by tragedy so he’s oblivious to the pain it creates. That will change no doubt as he matures and eventually faces tragedy of his own.

Or he might just be a subhuman piece of shit.

But it is funny to make games about Mexicans crossing the border or punching Osama Bin Laden repeatedly… Where oh where will we draw the line…

It is in bad taste yes. It is within his free speech rights yes. You dont have to play it or look at it and support his advertising…

I hate to break it to you, but by posting about the outrage you are supporting his behavior:

“I’ve done offensive things before but they’re not usually this popular,”

You know me… always the contrarian on RTN.

The situation at Virginia Tech was sensationalistic, but no more of a loss than the kids that get gunned down in inner cities every day. That same number of minority kids are killed every year.

A game like Grand Theft Auto uses the back drop of gangs and organized crime in the inner cities and that is ok, but a game about the Virginia Tech shooter is not. Yep, makes perfect sense to me…

Did anyone think that a Flash game about shooting VT students was NOT going to be created?

[…] Just a quick blurb to state a comment about a poorly created on-line flash game I fist heard about on RealTechNews and confirmed on Yahoo. I refuse to link to the game itself, but if a search on VTech is done, one would find a video game that puts the player as the shooter in the massacre. The game writer states that he understands Cho because he himself was picked on. Ha. So was I, but I learned how to deal with it by making something of myself. I had mentally promised that I would not write a response because I know how hot I can get. I could easily put both feet into my mouth. That does not mean I will discourage anyone else from writing… All I can say is, “UGH. WHY???” […]
