Honest, Vista’s not selling THAT badly

It certainly isn’t good news when one of your biggest partners, Dell, decides to start selling XP again … but Microsoft says that reports that Vista sold only 244 copies in China in the first two weeks are “just plain wrong”.

“Recent speculation regarding sales data in China is inaccurate,” Microsoft said in response to an inquiry from CNET News.com. “We’re pleased with the positive consumer response we’ve seen around the globe to the security and usability enhancements in Windows Vista–and China is no exception.” Source: News.com

We Say: My guess is Microsoft isn’t taking into account all the pirated copies being sold on the streets of Hong Kong. That would really help their sales figures. :-)

    Thanks for that news-free news item.

    Microsoft’s response, that 244 copies in China was “inaccurate”, doesn’t really say much at all. So the actual sales figure was 242? Or 2400? Equally pitiful.

    Adding that they’re pleased means nothing. They can be pleased with anything they wish, and they can also legally say they’re pleased when they’re not.

    The only real effect of this article is to bring once again to our attention that Vista is selling poorly, that interesting unconfirmed Chinese figure, and of course Dell’s decision to actually please their own customers by selling an OS that works.

    OK, so maybe this was a good news item after all.

    Those numbers are misleading, for instance I just bought a toshiba that came with Vista on it. However if I had the opportunity I would have bought a machine with no OS, since the first thing I did once I got the machine home was blow away the disk image an install Ubuntu 7.04

    I’m afraid your image about HK software piracy is outdated.
    I seldom see those gangsters selling pirated softwares in shops right now.

    Maybe those people can BT from America, Russia, etc ….
