Pulse Bicycle Safety Helmet

This gadget would probably look pretty dumb on my big head, but it looks good on her.

If I had a dollar for every time I’ve been at a park and seen a cyclist using a cell phone, . . . I would probably have enough money to get something like the Pulse bicycle safety helmet. Designed by Julie-Ann Davies, this helmet has a built-in Ear Drop feature with a Bluetooth receiver, so that cyclists can safely answer a cell phone; listen to music from an MP3 player or record cycling data while they’re on the go. The Ear Drop is located on the side of the helmet away from the roadside (which is why it’s not visible in the above image), so that the cyclist can still hear the traffic. While it isn’t completely hands-free, it has just 3 simple buttons for toggling the music or phone call, so there’s no reckless fiddling with wires or phone buttons. Source: PopGadget

We Say: This is a finalist in the Australian Design Award - Dyson Student Award competition, and it looks like a really good one, but it is not available commercially yet. So, someone will either snap it and the designer up, or there are a bunch of designers trying to come up with their own version right now, either way, I bet we see something like this on the market pretty soon.

It’s bad enough that idiots are talking on cell phones while driving cars and trucks, now we are going to have idiots riding bicycles while talking on cell phones.

I bicycle a lot, and would never play music or try to talk on the phone while riding. It’s just too dangerous and way too stupid. It also doesn’t look as if this helmet has any ventilation, and they can’t even adjust it correctly to fit on her head. Bad idea.

I am a bicycle accident attorney in Los Angeles and can see how that could reduce fatal bike accidents in busy cities like Los Angeles.
