Look for this sentence to download: “Hold down when clicking to download.” That sometimes changed to ^-)

    Enjoy!

No persistence. Twenty minutes after you change your Start button, something in the bowels of Windows sets it back to “Start.” Too bad.

I downloaded it from the home page and use it:

    http://www.geocities.com/startbtn/

There are 3 downloads… Program + source code, program only, and source code only! The first 2 do say to hold the shift key while clicking but I’ll be damned if I know why. That’s like the shortcut key for “open in new window” I believe!

You don’t have to hold any keys, the download works fine.

The source code is in Delphi5… I loaded it in Delphi7 and it compiled fine. The web page says not to modify the program but if you are into Delphi, you may not to anyway for your own personal use.

He is a good programmer but does one lousy job at guessing what the width of the start button should be… He like counts the characters then adds 64 pixels and that might a good average if you use 5 characters, else it’s some pretty lousy font metrics!

As was already stated, the change is temporary and the start button will revert back to normal in time. (even without reboot) To keep the change may require a registry setting or something but when you read his source code, you’ll see he is merely using Windows API function to find and manipulate the window handle of the start buton. (hwnd) The actual rename is using “wm_SetText” (windows messaging) to change the caption of the button.

Opening Task Manager will cause the Start button to revert back to “start” immediately.

Pretty useless if it changes itself back to default. What’s the point of creating this tool, let alone using it?
