More Dell Vista Upgrade Hell

By Jimmy Daniels

Michael has been kind enough to let us know how his Vista upgrade has gone so far, if you know Hoyt and Delbert, then you already know his answer, NOT TOO GOOD!

Well, another gentleman bought a Dell a day before the upgrade period started, he called Dell to cancel and place it again the next day, so he could get the free upgrade, and Dell told him, no worries, we’ll send you a copy as soon as Microsoft releases it. How did that go? NOT TOO GOOD! Here are some of the lines the customer support people told him when he inquired about the free upgrade.

“We understand your desire to obtain the Upgrade to Windows Vista, when available, and therefore are making the retail version of the Windows Vista Upgrade available to you at 50% of the normal price and fully covered by technical support from Microsoft.”

“The best and the last deal we can offer you is, we will pay 70% and you pay 30%.”

“Bradly, as you have placed the order on 10/25/06 and Vista started on 10/26/2006, your system is not eligible for the free vista upgrade.” Source: Dell: Absolutely Free Vista Upgrade 70% Off

We Say: Did he get the upgrade? Only after he wrote a letter to Michael Dell, the CEO, someone from the executive office contacted him and said they would be sending it free of charge. Now, was that so hard? I should be receiving my free copy tomorrow, or at least that’s what my email said, but I’m not crossing my fingers just yet.

the upgrade process certainly isn’t slick or painless.
I bought an HP machine that was eligable for an upgrade, but to get the rebate have to send in the barcode
so of course the upgrade process asks for… the barcode. and the reciept, and the serial number, and the windows key, and….
wouldn’t it have been easier to use WGA to know when you first registered the machine and just auto-update!

To be honest, I’ve kinda put a stop to my Vista upgrade nightmare for now by simply not installing … yet … later this month.

Before you guys go any upgrade to Windows Vista, make sure you backup your Hard Drive. Portable Hard Drives are dirt cheap these days.

I would like to hear from more if the upgrade made your PC performed faster or slower. Provide your PC specs.

Vista has been working great on laptops. I have a Latitude for work that I got 6 months ago and I just bought an Inspiron for my in-law. I rebuilt the laptops instead of upgrade. So far, it seems that vista works better than XP: Look and feel are great, IE never freezes.
