iTunes Almost Works with Windows Vista

Apple has released an update to iTunes, version 7.1 addressed a number of issues with Windows Vista, but a few issues still remain.
- Ejecting an iPod from Windows Explorer or the Windows notification area (system tray) using the “Safely Remove Hardware” feature may corrupt your iPod. To always safely eject an iPod, choose Eject iPod from the Controls menu within iTunes. If your iPod becomes corrupt, selecting your iPod in iTunes and clicking Restore in the iPod’s Summary panel should return your iPod to a working condition.
- iTunes may display text or graphics incorrectly on your screen. Resizing the iTunes window should correct this issue.
- Contacts from Windows Address Book may not sync with iPod.
- iTunes remains unsupported on 64 bit editions of Windows, including Windows Vista and Windows XP x64.

We Say: Again, a clean install is recommended, and you should deauthorize all accounts before upgrading. If we could just copy mp3’s and play them on the iPod to start with, none of this would be a problem.

Be careful there Jimmy… the Mac-bashing threat level is at orange right now.
Microsoft considers dropping MacOffice? Apple replies, “I see your dropped Office Suite and raise you one buggy iTunes media player.

Is this an Apple issue, or a Vista issue?
I’m a little disappointed that Apple doesn’t have it working 100 percent — but then, maybe it’s not their fault? From what I’ve read, people are having a lot of problems with Vista (and some are wondering if it’s even relevant.
One thing I know — it works great on my Mac.

It was more of a statement about their DRM than it was anything else, me, I would just load up my iPod and then upgrade to Vista, by the time I would get tired of all of those songs, someone should have something working properly.

I’m with you Jimmy. I mean, if anyone tried to sell a CD that could only be played in Panasonic CD players, they would go down in flames. Can’t begin to understand how Apple pulls it off.
They are Suuuuuuperrrr Genius.

Microsoft drm’d tracks will not play on my Mac. Since there are many incompatible drm formats for online purchased music, you are just writing about the state of the industry. I wouldn’t reduce it to just iTunes.

Swissfondue (ha!)…
Ah, but Microsoft DRM’d tracks play on every other player on the market. It’s Apple that does not want drm schemes playing on their hardware.
Also, the quote you used from my post has nothing to do with your comment. CDs will play on all hardware platforms.

If only MS hadn’t just dropped Vista on the PC world like a bomb.. Maybe some time in beta and with a Release Candidate out there for software authors to test and fix bugs..
Anyone else thing Apple just wanted to cause mischief with MS’s new OS? When Apple drops their annual new OS release everyone will ooh and ahh over it and think “gee wish MS could do it so smoothly” because afterall, all faults in the new Apple OS will be because 3rd party software.

iTunes 7.1.1 was waiting to be installed yesterday evening. I had Outlook 2007 running as always, and I clicked on the install button, hoping for resolution to the iPod corruption issues. Next thing I know, Outlook just disappears - crashes without any error message. iTunes finished installing, then I tried to restart Outlook and got a message that the .ost file was corrupt and it had to restart. This continued until I found the “ScanOst.exe” tool and resynced the .ost file to Exchange. Just fair warning for anyone who uses Vista, Outlook, and iTunes. It would be a very good idea to close Outlook before any installation of iTunes 7.1.1 or greater. This did not happen with any previous version of iTunes on any Windows OS including Beta and RCs of Vista.

[…] As Jimmy wrote earlier, iTunes and Windows Vista didn’t play well together, at least if you used the “Safely Remove Hardware” feature. Doing so could have corrupted your iPod. Some changes were made to iTunes 7.1, but as Apple indicated, it was a Vista issue. Microsoft has patched the issue. Among several patches released for the new operating system was one designed to address iPod issues that have appeared. Users had complained that their iPods were becoming corrupted after using the “Safely Remove Hardware” option to eject the player. Source: BetaNews […]

I am running a beta version of MS Vista - when streaming music from a shared itunes library, it connects and plays for a few seconds but then stops.
When it stops the shared itunes library dissapears and you have to restart iTunes to see it again.
Do you know why this is?
it works fine on my xp machines
