Another Sony Misstep

Apparently, in all of their wisdom, Sony has decided to not allow porn video on their Blu-Ray discs. If any Blu-Ray disc manufacturer prints porn discs they will lose their license.
Has Sony gone mad? Prominent adult movie producer Digital Playground (site) says it is forced to use HD DVD instead of Blu-ray, because Sony does not allow XXX-rated movies to be released on Blu-ray.
It does not matter how you stand to porn. It is here and it is a massive business. It is also an industry that is an early adopter for new media technology. VHS might not have won with out the adult film industry adopting it. Source: No Porn On Sony HD-DVD Blu-ray?
We Say: I’m not surprised, with all of their previous missteps, they are definitely on a downhill slide. Not everyone watches porn, and most people, who do watch it, probably don’t talk about it to people who don’t, but I think this is the moment Sony decided the Blu-Ray was going to lose.

It makes you wonder what Sony thinks made Betamax fail? Maybe there’s nobody left at Sony that could pass on ‘Lessons Learned’ from Beta.

maybe they still think betamax was the best choice
poor sad sad sony.
Gonna suck when all those people that are spending $600+ on the PS3 find out they have to buy a hd-dvd player too
Mike
Porn people shouldnt use blue-ray even if they woudl start to allow it, let sony suffer a bit!

Though this isn’t a smart move on Sony’s part it may not be as important as the Beta - VHS situation.
In that format war there wasn’t really any other choices. Consumers today have DVDs, PCs, the entire internet, and of course videotape to get their porn fix.
Additionally there is some question as to how quickly the new formats will be adopted. Many consumers are satisfied with the quality of DVD.

Charles says:
I don’t think the other distribution methods matter. Pron will exist on the HD-DVD format, and the consumer base of those movies are not going to buy a Blu-Ray player. This fact will not be lost on the film distribution companies.
The new formats will roll-out slowly, but now is when it starts. The media choices like this are what starts one format down the path of success, and the other down the path of Beta.

It seems like Sony might be trying to save face making this announcement. I say this because I’m pretty sure I saw some news tidbit last week as to how the porn industry was choosing HD-DVD. So this kind of seems like Sony saying “Well we didn’t want you anyway”
