At least for <a href="http://www.writely.com" rel="nofollow">Writely</a>, you can "share" your document so that others can work on it. This is more efficient than emailing a document back and forth, and that efficiency manifests itself when you're working with a <i>team</i> -- although one might argue that a wiki would be even better. They <i>do</i> have to cover hosting costs, and I'd rather that they do it with ads rather than subscription fees. Second, the cost of a software license is only a small proportion of the costs of <i>any</i> software. There's the cost of back-up, not just a license for back-up software (can avoid that by going with free-beer backup software) but with the time you have to put into it. If there's a company out there that will take care of saving my files online, they've got my business. Better if they're advertising-supported so I don't have to pay. Third -- and corollary to the second point -- another cost of software is maintenance. When an update comes in, I have to take time to download and install it. OTOH, a hosted application is upgraded on the server, without my having to worry about it -- I'd let the SysAdmins take care of that. Having said all that, I do still have OOo on my PC, and use it more than I do the online office suites. But then, I do have both the expertise and the time -- and maybe the requisite masochism -- to take care of my own setup.
