Updated: Wife, Daughters of CNET Editor Found Alive
By Michael Santo

You may recall I earlier wrote about CNET Senior Editor James Kim and his family, who had been missing since November 25th. I just listened to a live video feed from CNET, and Kim’s 30-year-old wife, Kati, and daughters Penelope (4 years) and Sabine (7 months) have been found alive in a remote area or southern Oregon. Apparently James Kim, 35, left two days ago on snowshoes … from what police termed on the video feed as “a crash site.” He has not been found.
Authorities indicated Kati and the daughters have been airlifted out and they hope to have more details at 5PM PST.
Update: They found James Kim’s tracks, but lost them about 2 miles from his family’s SUV. They are bringing in a Blackhawk helicopter with FLIR to hopefully find him tonight. If not, they will be bringing in dog teams and horse patrols tomorrow morning.
Apparently the family was traced by their cell phone. They couldn’t make a call, but authorities could spot their signal and narrowed the search.
Update 2: James is still missing as of this morning. Their SUV apparently became stuck in the snow. Once the car ran out of gas they burned the tires. They had some minor provisions, including bottled water and blankets, and James set up “camp” as though it was a camping trip to help the family get through the ordeal. They still plan to use horses and dogs today. Hopefully more good news to come.

This is so sad. As a CNET alumn, and just in general, I really feel for them. I hope he is OK.

I also hope he’s alright. It doesn’t sound good that he didn’t return to the car when he was supposed to. However, I’m sure that he wouldn’t have left without a lot of gear with him to stay warm. Anyway, it’s great that they found Kati and their two children. Hopefully James will be found soon as well.

The local news here in Oregon stated that the Sheriff’s department has found his tracks through the snow, and that they are using FLIR equipped helicopters in their search. Updates as I get them.

When I first heard they disappeared it made me quite sad. I wouldn’t presume to know him at all, but every time he did a pmp video review on cnet.com I watched. He seemed so upbeat and worth watching. Seeing someone I routinely watch just disappear one day… I dunno. I wouldn’t wish upon anyone to just disappear from the world alone and without a single word.

In a story dated at 2:09 pm Pacific, the KGW 8 web page reports that James’ jeans, and possibly other personal items have been located in the search area.

SomeDumbGuy says:
At a press conference just held, it was announced that a satellite will be moved in order to afford a better look at the search area. Although fog hampers the immediate use of helicopters, search units are being deployed in front of the current search area to head off Mr. Kim’s possible arrival at a confluence of the stream he is following and the Rogue River.
