Dell Opens a Second Life Store

By Michael Santo

Every time I hear about more things like this, like Reuters opening up a news bureau in Second Life or Big Brother expanding into it, I wonder if I should try getting into Second Life myself. Now Dell’s opened a store up in Second Life.

According to a virtual press conference held today in Second Life, Dell Island, an area inside the game that is officially licensed by the computer maker, now includes a retail store where people can purchase Dell computers without even leaving the game. Source: TG Daily

We Say: According to the article, the first person who purchased a PC in the virtual store would get the PC for free. I’m sure it’s too late for any of you. However, apparently the way it works, you can make the purchase without leaving the game. :-)

Well, they certainly didn’t advertise it well. They had an invitation-only walkthrough, and that was that.

I don’t think they really made a lot of sales today, if any.

[…] A few days ago I wrote a piece at RealTechNews about Dell opening a store in Second Life. General Motors’ Pontiac Division is setting up shop as well, but it’s only products will be computer-generated cars, purchasable with Linden Dollars. For now, at least, the Pontiac dealership will offer just one model: the Pontiac Solstice GXP. But you can have it in any color you want. And we do mean any color. Stripes, spots, plaid, purple daisies. No problem. There will be no repair shops. […]
