TIOTI (Tape It Off The Internet), a new download service looking to provide subscribers with legitimate television downloads with purchases and Bittorent feeds, is accepting email addresses for sending out invitation to use the service.
Here’s an excerpt about their service:
We currently index 1,600+ TV shows - 90,000+ episodes - and we are matching everything up with content sources like iTunes, AOL and Amazon Unbox - with more to come.
Our beta feature set allows you to do exactly what it says on the tin and do it in style. With integrated message boards, groups, personalised badges and an extensive API, we have lots more great stuff coming soon too.
So we’re slightly curious as to why they used the obsolete word “Tape”…

The use of the term “tape” very likely is a fallback to imply this new service is like using a VCR. Why?
In 1984 the US Supreme Court decided that it is legal (fair use) to time-shift television programs. This case was revolving around larger more self-centered issue involving VHS and Betamax, but the fair-use fallout has been a boon for peoples’ rights. Of course, recently there has been a process to slowly strip that away.

Probably because every domain name less than 23 characters other than a**wipe.com and tioti.com was taken. So they made the best of it.

Actually, many people that grew up with VCR’s still use “Tape” for recorded content, even on a DVR. I know my wife and I do. As in “Hey, West Wing is new tonight. Lets tape it”
