Firefox 2.0 Released Early?
By Michael Santo

I’ve noticed FileForum has a tendency to release things a tad bit early … frequently earlier than other download sites. For example, last week they had the Yahoo! version of IE7 out before Microsoft even updated their site.
Now, this isn’t necessarily a good thing because something they release something as final when it’s not. On the other hand, they frequently release stuff early that is valid. In this case, it looks like they have version 2.0 of Firefox already available, despite my story over the weekend in which Mozilla stated it would be delivered tomorrow. I followed the path to the ftp directory, and it looks like it’s correct. There’s a directory labeled 2.0 and it’s got a binary in it that’s dated today.
We Say: No sign of this on Mozilla’s site at the time of this writing. It looks legit, but your mileage may vary.

“something they release something”?
Did you mean “sometimes they release something”?

David Johnston says:
It has been released early. This happens with all Firefox releases. They go out to the mirrors before the main page is updated. Check Mozilla’s FTP repository here: ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/
You’ll see that they have a folder for 2.0 (no RC) that was created today. That’s it

I got the 2.0 RC and it seems a little buggy to me. Specifically, the browser just collapses for no apparent reason. So the built in recover is a good thing.

Incidentally, it can be downloaded off of the official site too, if you change the version number to 2.0. For example, if you wanted the Windows version of 2.0 for English, use the link: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/products/download.html?product=firefox-2.0&os=win&lang=en-US
