Firefox 2 Due Out 10/24

Perhaps you browser downloaders downloaded the wrong “new browser”?  Less than a week after Internet Explorer 7’s debut, Mozilla plans to release version 2.0 of Firefox.

According to Mozilla Vice President of Products Christopher Beard, Firefox 2.0, which should be available on Tuesday if all goes according to schedule, includes key new usability features missing in the new IE 7.  Source: PC World

We Say: Hard to choose, eh?  I do know there are a lot of IE7 issues listed on Usenet.  Plus, I myself, as I previously said, could not get Maxthon to work once IE7 was installed (it crashed straight to the desktop after about a minute of use).  I also found issues with IETab and Firefox crashing when browsing a page that IETab opened in the IE engine.  FeedDemon also crashed when using its internal browser.  So empirically it looks like there’s an issue with the engine when it’s used by other programs.

Will Firefox 2 be more stable?  One problem will be all the extensions will have to be updated to install … unless they’ve preconfigured themselves to be installable in 2.x versions.  Guess we’ll see in 4 days.

I’ve been using FireFox 2.0 for several days. Seems fine to me. I think I got a popup or email from
    Mozilla to upgrade. ??

FireFox will notify you if there is an upgrade. You can turn the notification off if you want. Look under Tools > Options.

You still gotta install IE7, more’s the pity, no matter what– Windows security depends on it even if you never use it…
