Paint.NET Makes MS Paint Pretty Powerful (At Last)
By Alice Hill

When it comes to image manipulation packages, a lot of people like myself skip the complexity of Photoshop and use good old MS Paint. Why? It’s easy and fast, it’s on every PC we come across, and we like it that way! Actually, we don’t like Paint that much, so it was with great joy that I came across Paint.NET.
The software started as a senior year college programming project mentored by Microsoft to create a better version of Paint. The software was written in C# as part of Microsoft’s move to C# and ASP.Net, and while it never became a shrink-wraped piece of software (and don’t even get me started on .Net), it is being maintained by the original gang and is getting rave reviews. Best of all. it’s free. The unlimited undos feature alone makes it worth a look.

Paint.NET has been my primary graphic-editing tool for quite a while now. It’s got all the power I need and I find it easier to use than Photoshop and the GIMP. I mean, 99% of my “photo editing” just involves cropping or resizing–two things that Paint.NET does exceedingly well.

Had Paint.Net loaded for some time. Nice program tho I lost it during a cleanup. I find my Paint Shop Pro install is still with me and easy to fall back into. GIMP has a few tools I use in rarer circumstances also. Pixia is a nice little program tho I’m not sure this is the official site it appears to be the right one. http://park18.wakwak.com/~pixia/

I’m leery of downloads that require more downloads (”If you do not have the .NET Framework installed, or if you are not sure, please download the following installer…”). For fixing single photos, wallpaper, etc., I like Irfanview:

I’ve been using Paint.Net for about 18 months now and I think it’s awesome. A great example of how good bloat-free apps can be. I actually have licences for Photoshop and Fireworks but since my last machine rebuild they’ve been sitting on the shelf!
On it’s own it’s great for almost everything I do, and the Photoshop file import/export capability means I’m never stuck when I get files from designers to work with.
It’s quick, it’s lightweight, it’s stable and release 3.0 promises even more goodies. And priced free it’s by far the best value.
Coupled with something like the Gadwin Print-Screen for grabbing screen-shots it’s part of my essential USB Key mounted toolkit (soon to be MojoPac mounted)
I tried GIMP for a few months and found it to be slow and difficult to use. On the other hand my 7yo uses P.N!
@ Bill.R - .net 2.0 framework is something you’re going to have to have sooner or later… it’s worth it for Paint.Net!
