Enviga: Coke and Nestle’s New Soda That Burns Calories

In the battle to go from high calorie to low calorie to no calorie soft drinks, Coca Cola and Nestle are teaming up to produce what they claim will be the first soft drink that actually burns calories. The drink will go on sale November of this month in the northeastern US and then nationally in January 2008 with a hefty $1.29 a can price tag- far more than the 12-pak pricing of Diet and regular Coke.

How Does It Work?
First the hype er science…the Enviga drink is based on green tea which is supposed to have a number of healthful benefits as well as a hidden calorie-burning capability. “Enviga contains the optimum blend of green tea extracts (EGCG), caffeine and naturally active plant micronutrients designed to work with your body to increase calorie burning, thus creating a negative calorie effect. It makes this product stand out as unique. Enviga brings the benefits of green tea to the forefront in a convenient and accessible, great tasting beverage.” Claimed Chief Scientist at Coke, Dr. Rhona Applebaum.

But How Many Calories?
Nestle did a study with the University of Lausanne and they found that drinking three cans of Enviga a say will burn 60-100 calories.

We Say: Breathing burns calories, and even sitting perfectly still staring at a wall burn calories. We can’t truly fault a company for trying to cash in on overweight Americans. And offering them an easy way to consume and lose weight at the same time is a pretty slick trick, but we just don’t buy it. Toss back a can of this while eating a second slice of pizza and all the calorie burning in the world won’t help. And three cans a day is a pretty expensive habit. No thanks. Plus the name sounds about as tasty as the thought of a green tea energy drink. I’d rather go outside and lick my lawn and then have a cup of coffee.

Instead of drinking Enviga, check out SodaFinder - a site created by a guy who loves obscure soda. They have Mr. Pibb and all sorts of hard-find stuff.

You can also burn calories by drinking water. In fact, I should market bottled water with the calorie-burning claim and sell it for $3/bottle.

My local Kroger sells a half gallon carton of just plain green tea without the carbonation or berry flavor for less than two bucks. And it’s the Nestea brand. Since it appears that green tea is the beneficial ingredient here, I’m wondering why I’d buy this product. Maybe they’ll put some hot bods in the ads, ya think?

Hey, David, cold water works better as the body has to bring it up to core temp… and that burns calories

Willofgod, you’re right. I’d make a “special edition” that would burn more calories. On the bottle I would instruct the consumer to refridgerate the beverage to just above freezing temperature in order to achieve the maximum effect of the “special edition” water.

    …$5/bottle.

Enviga has spawned other spin-off tea sodas. I saw one in Whole Foods the other day called Steaz. What crap - it’s all sugar. Drink plain tea or drink water. Stay away from these overpriced junk drinks! If yoiu don’t know what glycation is, google it.
