We all knew it had to happen right, how could millions of batteries be recalled, but none from Sony laptops?
Sony also said it would recall 90,000 of its Vaio brand laptop computer batteries in Japan and China, adding its name to the list of PC vendors recalling a total of about 8 million Sony batteries, which the company has said can on rare occasions overheat and catch fire.
“We are in the process of determining whether a revision to our annual earnings outlook is necessary, taking into account various factors that could affect our group earnings,” the electronics and entertainment conglomerate said on its Web site. Source: Yahoo

so.. what about all the Vaio users in Europe, the US and the rest of the world who are happily using their Vaio timebombs?
I have two of them (an old PictureBook which eats batteries, and a new T27GP that is on it’s second battery in 18 months and has never got the sort of battery life they claim). My CyberShot was also terrible on battery life.
I was in the market for a PS3 and a new laptop. Now if it’s my own money I’ll probably get something from AlienWare(Dell) or Toshiba for computing duties and an xbox360 for fun.
It’s not just exploding batteries that’s hurting Sonys reputation - it’s their attitude that’s turning even long term, formerly loyal, customers away

The problem is that the Sony Rep I contacted said A. Sony was only replacing the batteries if the system was still under warranty AND B. They are not responsible for any other damage.
We have a $3000 GRT Vaio that is a doorstop because the battery overheated, shorted out and messed up the motherboard right after the 1 year warranty.
Sigh.
