Disturbing Tech: The Geek-a-Cycle Exercise Bicycle Workstation

There are so many thngs wrong with this picture. The concept means well, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. A company called Slimgeek started by a not so slim 200+ pound guy who lived at home with his mother (no!) decided to come up with a way to combine exercise and computing so he could stay in his basement and lose weight. True, he has lost over 24 lbs, but don’t expect to see these in offices anytime soon (or the creator.) Slimgeek pitches these as office workstations - so you can get home from work and not go to a gym. Price: $350 USD.

We Say: If my boss could wire this to a power generator, we’d be talking. Our suggestion: create a game that is operated by how fast you pedal and then we’re in business. This is a home machine concept at best.

How about wiring it so that the PC only works while you pedal, even at a slow rate? It may not have to power the PC, but at least FORCE the person to use it.

Hmmm.. video games that help you lose weight. there was this game one time… I don’t think it did very well, was kind of a niche product… dance dance something-or-other.

On a more serious note. It will take alot of training to be about to operate a computer and exercise. Try it sometime… bring a laptop to a gym and try doing anything other the solitare, while you’r eon a tredmill, etc. It’s very hard to concentrate. I tried this with a stationary bike and my PDA and I couldn’t do both very well.

Alice Hill, you are a complete moron. These are innovative ideas that apparently you are too stupid to comprehend. Go back to your worthless wanna-be reporter life, and let these guys, who are clearly smarter than you lead the future.

The Ontario Science Centre had a bunch of bikes hooked up to tvs; now THERE is an idea with some staying power. I might even get one if I could find it for $350.

You are talking about Dance Dance Revolution and it couldnt be BIGGER!!!

I have seen competitions where these kids go crazy… (quite popular with the Aname lovers whom interestingly enough are the stay at home kids who still play with toys and watch cartoons)

The only one of the above that I have a problem with is the Dog-powered Scooter, mainly from a safety standpoint. Mainly, the safety of the dog, since it’s strapped to the gizmo.

Otherwise, I like all the rest of the ideas very much. The toilet thing is excellent and the Geek-a-cycle thing is great. I do not understand why you object to any of these ideas except for the dog-powered one.

Theres a device you hook up to your tv that monitors your heart rate, as your heart rate drops, if your not exercising the volume on the tv starts going down.
    Until it finally shuts off.
So if you wanna keep watching tv you gotta keep advertising.
