Don’t Expect Too Many Frantically-High-Priced PS3, Wii Auctions on eBay

Remember those incredibly high-priced Xbox 360 eBay auctions from last year? You’re not going to see anything like that for the PS3 or Wii this year, at least not yet, as eBay is enforcing their policy regarding pre-sales auctions and delivery dates, and has angered some sellers by doing so.

The rules are: eBay permits Pre-sale listings only on a limited basis. The seller must guarantee that the item will be available for shipping within 30 days from the date of purchase (i.e., the day the listing ends or the date the item is purchased from a store front listing).

It seems eBay has learned from last year’s Xbox 360 launch fiasco in which retail stores that allowed unlimited preorders ultimately delivered far fewer Xbox 360s than customers were expecting. The result? eBay customers paid for items that opportunistic console campers had no chance of delivering in a timely fashion.Don’t hate on eBay. They’re just being responsible. If and when you get one of these consoles in your hot little hands, list it then. Source: JoyStiq

We Say: Actually, based on the rules, as the release date gets closer, these auctions will fall into the time-frame and (I’m assuming) will appear. But, at the time of this writing there aren’t any for actual game systems on eBay. I’m hoping there won’t be a feeding frenzy over the PS3 this year … but most likely I’m hoping in vain.

The problem is I do not think Gamestop or EBGames are actually GUARANTEEING these systems. That’s why I don’t think it’s fair to sell them because the consumers are guaranteed to get one. Plus you don’t want the Managers of these stores making a killing off of them either, by hording them.

With Sony’s limited supply, I bet we see a lot of auctions come out after they go on sale. If I was an ebay seller, I’d much rather wait for the prices to go up then to get a pre-sale anyway.

    pickard,
Gamestop isn’t guaranteeing them, so you need a refund option in the auction. Gamestop took $ from people to hold a PS3. If they can’t deliver on the preorders you get your deposit back. Same thing on an ebay acution.

    I bet they average $1500

I have no problem with people trying to make $$ off of the system, but it does suck becuase thare are more people in line that are gonna sell it, than keep it!

[…] eBay policy on pre-orders detrimental to comics retailers eBay announced last week that it’s clamping down on pre-order sales on Playstations 3s and Nintendo Wii consoles. Last year, when the Xbox 360 came out, numerous eBay buyers were hurt when they tried to buy consoles through such auctions, only to suffer when sellers couldn’t deliver the product. […]

i think they should not allow any people to sell the damn product until they have enough systems for everybody that way if you buy one in the store you have to keep it so 99% of the consoles will be kept insead of 90% sold
