20 Things the Average Person Doesn’t Know About Windows XP
By Unknown Writer
Via Digg
1. It boasts how long it can stay up. Go to the Command Prompt in the Accessories menu from the All Programs start button option, and then type ’systeminfo’. The computer will produce a lot of useful info, including the uptime. If you want to keep these, type ’systeminfo > info.txt’. This creates a file called info.txt you can look at later with Notepad. (Professional Edition only).
2. You can delete files immediately, without having them move to the Recycle Bin first. Go to the Start menu, select Run… and type ‘gpedit.msc’; then select User Configuration, Administrative Templates, Windows Components, Windows Explorer and find the Do not move deleted files to the Recycle Bin setting. Set it. Poking around in gpedit will reveal a great many interface and system options, but take care — some may stop your computer behaving as you wish. (Professional Edition only).
3. You can lock your XP workstation with two clicks of the mouse. Create a new shortcut on your desktop using a right mouse click, and enter ‘rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation’ in the location field. Give the shortcut a name you like. That’s it — just double click on it and your computer will be locked. And if that’s not easy enough, Windows key + L will do the same.
4. XP hides some system software you might want to remove, such as Windows Messenger, but you can make it show everything. Using Notepad or Edit, edit the text file /windows/inf/sysoc.inf, search for the word ‘hide’ and remove it. You can then go to the Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel, select Add/Remove Windows Components and there will be the software and you can now uninstall it.
5. For those skilled in the art of DOS batch files, XP has a number of interesting new commands. These include ‘eventcreate’ and ‘eventtriggers’ for creating and watching system events, ‘typeperf’ for monitoring performance of various subsystems, and ’schtasks’ for handling scheduled tasks. As usual, typing the command name followed by /? will give a list of options.
6. XP has IP version 6 support — the next generation of IP. Unfortunately this is more than your ISP has, so you can only experiment with this on your LAN. Type ‘ipv6 install’ into Run… (it’s OK, it won’t ruin your existing network setup) and then ‘ipv6 /?’ at the command line to find out more. If you don’t know what IPv6 is, don’t worry.
7. You can at last get rid of tasks on the computer from the command line by using ‘taskkill /pid’ and the task number, or just ‘tskill’ and the process number. Find that out by typing ‘tasklist’, which will also tell you a lot about what’s going on in your system.
8. XP will treat Zip files like folders, which is nice if you’ve got a fast machine. On slower machines, you can make XP leave zip files alone by typing ‘regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll’ at the command line. If you change your mind later, you can change things back by typing ‘regsvr32 zipfldr.dll’.
9. XP has ClearType — Microsoft’s anti-aliasing font display technology — but doesn’t have it enabled by default. It’s well worth trying, especially if you were there for DOS and all those years of staring at a screen have given you the eyes of an astigmatic bat. To enable ClearType, right click on the desktop, select Properties, Appearance, Effects, select ClearType from the second drop-down menu and enable the selection. Expect best results on laptop displays. If you want to use ClearType on the Welcome login screen as well, set the registry entry HKEY_USERS/.DEFAULT/Control Panel/Desktop/FontSmoothingType to 2.
10. You can use Remote Assistance to help a friend who’s using network address translation (NAT) on a home network, but not automatically. Get your pal to email you a Remote Assistance invitation and edit the file. Under the RCTICKET attribute will be a NAT IP address, like 192.168.1.10. Replace this with your friend’s real IP address — they can find this out by going to www.whatismyip.com — and get them to make sure that they’ve got port 3389 open on their firewall and forwarded to the errant computer.
11. You can run a program as a different user without logging out and back in again. Right click the icon, select Run As… and enter the user name and password you want to use. This only applies for that run. The trick is particularly useful if you need to have administrative permissions to install a program, which many require. Note that you can have some fun by running programs multiple times on the same system as different users, but this can have unforeseen effects.
12. Windows XP can be very insistent about you checking for auto updates, registering a Passport, using Windows Messenger and so on. After a while, the nagging goes away, but if you feel you might go insane before that point, run Regedit, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer/Advanced and create a DWORD value called EnableBalloonTips with a value of 0.
13. You can start up without needing to enter a user name or password. Select Run… from the start menu and type ‘control userpasswords2′, which will open the user accounts application. On the Users tab, clear the box for Users Must Enter A User Name And Password To Use This Computer, and click on OK. An Automatically Log On dialog box will appear; enter the user name and password for the account you want to use.
14. Internet Explorer 6 will automatically delete temporary files, but only if you tell it to. Start the browser, select Tools / Internet Options… and Advanced, go down to the Security area and check the box to Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed.
15. XP comes with a free Network Activity Light, just in case you can’t see the LEDs twinkle on your network card. Right click on My Network Places on the desktop, then select Properties. Right click on the description for your LAN or dial-up connection, select Properties, then check the Show icon in notification area when connected box. You’ll now see a tiny network icon on the right of your task bar that glimmers nicely during network traffic.
16. The Start Menu can be leisurely when it decides to appear, but you can speed things along by changing the registry entry HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Control Panel/Desktop/MenuShowDelay from the default 400 to something a little snappier. Like 0.
17. You can rename loads of files at once in Windows Explorer. Highlight a set of files in a window, then right click on one and rename it. All the other files will be renamed to that name, with individual numbers in brackets to distinguish them. Also, in a folder you can arrange icons in alphabetised groups by View, Arrange Icon By… Show In Groups.
18. Windows Media Player will display the cover art for albums as it plays the tracks — if it found the picture on the Internet when you copied the tracks from the CD. If it didn’t, or if you have lots of pre-WMP music files, you can put your own copy of the cover art in the same directory as the tracks. Just call it folder.jpg and Windows Media Player will pick it up and display it.
19. Windows key + Break brings up the System Properties dialogue box; Windows key + D brings up the desktop; Windows key + Tab moves through the taskbar buttons.
20. Windows XP secretly KNOWS that the average user has no idea what they are doing. Therefore, it doesn’t let you do really stupid things like deleting the windows directory (at least not without spending several hours convincing it that you REALLY want to do this). Oh yeah, and internet explorer kinda sucks, get Firefox.

#2 You can delete files immediately by selecting the and pressing shift + delete. So that kids & drunk friends don’t accidenlty delete files. Since using undelete tools can be a bit messy if you install thngs before you realise someone deleted something
#3 winkey + L will do the same, without files cluttering the desktop.

Even if you ISP doesn’t have IPv6, XP comes with transition mechanisms that will help you to get it working automatically tunneling thru your ISP network. If that doesn’t work, you can always use a tunnel broker, such as the one at www.ipv6tf.org.

Poor poor souls, arguing like such children over petty things about which the rest of the world has already decided.
For example, ANY browser that is not IE will be inherently safer to surf with, thanks to the fact that those browsers will not be EMBEDDED into the OS! That one factor alone is what causes so many security nightmares for users. Firefox has its flaws, yes, but at least under Firefox I never had to worry about ActiveX controls taking control of the OS itself, so no homepage hijackers, no hosts file corruptions, no endless recurring popups. Done. Not just a Firefox advantage, but at least FF is lightweight, and easy-to-use.
Back on topic, I like the Start menu popup tip. Simple fix, but still one of those fixes you can instantly recognize as an improvement.

Electric Cat Herder says:
It always amuses me how people always get into a shouting match over Internet Explorer. As someone who has used (and supported) every release of Windows since 3.1 and virtually every Mac OS, I’m amazed at what people say to defend IE.
First, IE is closely integrated with Windows. That is its biggest benefit, and biggest problem. ActiveX can be particularly dangerous. Apple’s Safari browser is the same way, so I use neither.
Firefox is not completely safe. However, it does have an additional layer of abstraction from the operating system, which makes it less risky. Regardless, as Firefox becomes more popular, it will become a more likely target.
IE would be safer if Windows users didn’t run their computers from administrator accounts. Even if one was conscientious enough to downgrade their everyday account to “mere mortal” status, they would be constantly hassled by poorly designed applications that simply refuse to run in a least privileged user environment.
Microsoft deserves credit for trying to improve Windows security (and Vista will finally offer least privileged users out of the box), but until all Windows applications are designed to run in such an environment, users will still be doing day to day tasks with administrator privileges.
Take home points:
If you use IE, do not log into your computer as an administrator except to install applications or use Microsoft Update.
If you use IE, pay attention to the Information Bar. Think before you click.
Use a good antivirus and an anti-spyware product, regardless of which browser you use.
Bitch like hell to the developer if you must use an application that only works properly with administrator privileges. Use runas if you have to.

Gosh, for people obviously purporting to be more tech savvy than the average user, it’s hilarious to see such ignorant comments about FireFox. IE sucks, big time, and even a little kiddie could tell you that. Anyone relying on their choice of browser to keep their PC “safe” is just a tad silly. Some good tips there, especially for teh n00bs.
Now for the geniuses out there. Comparing apples with apples, start Firefox, IE and Opera. Enter the same URL in each of the browsers. Press ‘go’ and calculate how long it takes the page to load COMPLETELY. After you find that IE is the fastest, press ctrl-alt-del and look at the processes and the memory used. I think you’ll be rather shocked to find the amount of memory used by Firefox. FireFox is bloatware as is Opera.

AVANT Browser rocks my socks. It runs on top of the IE shell and has excellent popup and ad blocking abilities. You have to go into the options after installing to enable these and remove the annoying address balloon, but still wonderful. Can also check uncheck flash, java, etc for your needs. Also gives old IE tabbed browsing, RSS feeds, etc. FF is garbage unless you enjoy DLing a new plugin everytime you visit a new webpage. It’s rendering time is garbage also. Why get broadband if you still have dial up rendering speeds? Also google blackviper’s guide to turning off Admin system services to speed up things and make your computer bulletproof. You want uptime??? You got it. Finally go to speedguide.net and DL their speedup patches. They restore multiple concurrent connections to the same webpage that SP2 limited. They rock… Those are my tips as n00by or cool as they may be. I’ve never had an unsatisfied customer yet after installing these things. Finally: get rid of Norton!!! Get AVG for free from grisoft. And for godsake turn off those gay mac type transitions and fading effects. Go to control panel> System> Advanced tab> Click on the Performance button and set “For Best Performance” as a start. Hope these help. Oh yeah and Avant Browser can clear almost ALL of your internet files EACH time it closes. Check it out it’s free!

I tried FF and don’t like it. Try SlimBrowser from Flashpeak.com. It’s free. It uses IE’s core but is like IE on steroids. It supports RSS and uses tabbed browsing with a built in popup blocker. It also has built in search bar and built in zoom. The tabs makes surfing the web very productive. You can automatically open new tabs by using the center(wheel) button and close those tabs with it too. I’ve been using SB for 5 years now and M$ should take notes on this browser. I get frustrated with having to use IE because IMHO SB is so much more superior. Everyone I told about SB and has tried it loves it. There are too many other features to go on here but has a lot of great stuff and it very customizable.

Jimmy:
if you open one url, which you’ve never opened previously, in opera, ff, and ie concurrently, then yes, ie will usually be quickest, under the right conditions.
but browse around a bit in a manner more realisticaly resembling natural surfing, and you may find ie falling behind.
the preloading feature of ff often means that it has the next page loaded before you even open it.
and is page load time really an issue in this day and age? most pages do not take a significant amount of time to load on a broadband connection regardless of browser.
the functionality of opera also makes it much more efficient than ie, independant of page-load-time. once again, we have to return to a _realistic_ surfing situation. take fark.com, for example.
check out the day’s articles in ie. will you open each one in the current window, using the back button each time to return to the main page and wait for it to re-load? or will you right-click each link, select “open in new window,” and alt-tab between windows?
now give it a shot with opera. scroll down the links. as you find links that look interesting, hold ctrl+shift and click each one. they’ll be loading in the background without changing the focus from the page you’re on. when you have selected a few and want to read them, hold right-click and scroll with the mouse wheel to select each tab. finish reading an article; hold right-click and sweep your hand down and to the right a bit to close the tab quickly and silently.
i think you’ll find that these and other features more than compensate for any page-load-time differences.
opera is my favorite browser, but ff also has its high points. one thing, however, that can be known for certain, is that ie is poop.
like, from a butt.

Listen up all you newbs who think one browser is better than the other. ANY browser that supports execution on the client is a potential security flaw. Yes, thats javascript, VBScript, embeded objects, whatever. Someones going to come up with a new method to screw you over, and kill your machine. Why? Because they can.
Stop bitching and trying to show who has the biggest balls by saying one browser is better than the other. MOST of the point of this original posting is about tricks with THE OPERATING SYSTEM… Not with FF, not with IE.. Not with Opera.. Not with LYNX… Not with TELNET nor FTP.

Maybe I’m just crazy, but doesn’t user education and common sense factor in at some point so that we see that regardless of which browser-of-the-week is in use it ultimately comes down to resisting the urge to click the big red “don’t click me” buttons from the screensaver and such sites that users all go downloading crap from?

“20 Things the Average Person Doesn’t Know About Windows XP” - and should not know either. Firstly, letting an average user mess with registry hacks will most likely cause more trouble than gain. Secondly, the average user likes Windows because it is a shell hiding the -70s/DOS “one wrong semicolon and all hxxx breaks lose” dungeon. Command prompt, regedit and the likes may be fast and useful and all that if you know what you`re doing, but clinging to it under this title arrogantly ignores what the average user should be pointed to, namely good GUI-S to tweaking Windows. Like TweakUI.

Now as far as security of a browser goes, you could go to work tomorrow and get killed on the job and so grab a browser of your choice and enjoy, just keep your antivirus and critical updates updated. Both these browsers kick Firefox’s ass. You can tweak Firefox to load pages faster, but on my computer Opera still works a bit faster. However it’s so packed with bells and whistles and bullshit that I will never use that I stick to Firefox, which is also much cleaner and nicer to look at.
Btw you can basically get whatever Opera has on Firefox with extensions.

It’s pretty pathetic when you start babbling with people you don’t know about things that have absolutely no bearing on life whatsoever. If a browser connects you to the Internet, then that’s that, it’s good. That’s the end of the fucking argument.
But just because I’m itching to piss off those Firefox fanboys and those who pleasure themselves at the sight of that orange canidae, I used that browser a couple months ago and it blew testicles. Much slower than IE, wasn’t compatible with things that I use online, and it just wasn’t worth the trouble. I’ll stick with the OS default browser because I just don’t care to change the shit as long as it gets me places online.

feralshad0w says:
Windows is the system for 99% of people. As 99% of users just listen to music use MS office, and browse the internet for porn. Its very easy to use and learn. Im sorry but mac is a hassle for most people. Mac is great for alot of technical programs that they have designed their systems for over the years, such as design programs and all that crap. It shitty for games its more difficult for game makers to make compatible programs for macs cuz Mac wants to monopolatize its whole image. Thats the trade off. Windows wants to have everything so it makes it very adaptable (by having lots of holes for people to use). Mac is great for certain things but it can be very frustrating and sometimes impossible to run programs and apps that you may want to. So pick your poison.
As far as browsers: I really doesnt matter. FF is universal which is nice. But if you only use windows who gives a crap. For many people it will be nice that you can play media files right in te browser and its fun to have links to office for different projects.
As far as safety, 99% of virus’s and mal-ware are obtained by people visiting a porno site or something 2-bit where they click on a popup that downloads something onto their computer.
Or something is downloaded from a P2P service like kazaa. Either way its the user not the browser. Just surf the net on reliable sites and dont go click’en those random porno sites or “contest” adds.
The moral of the story is that windows is the most convenient choice that most people will be happiest with for compatability and interface. If you have a particular reason to use a mac, go for it. It will match your Ipod which I am sure you will be excited about.

. Also…telnet SUCKS….plaintext transmission…lol. Use telnet on my network and all your password are belong to libpcap. SSH pwns telnet. And FTP eh? What about SFTP? Judging by the fact that you even mentioned telnet means a) your not a programmer and b) you probably haven’t touched *NIX box in your life.

THAT is why IE is faster than (almost) all other browsers, because it boots with windows. You know that 200M or so worth of system resources XP uses when it boots? part of that is IE. If you had a program that loaded firefox and pals into memory upon startup, it would load fast too.
The only appealing reason for using IE 6 is that it deeply integrates with Active Directory and Group Policy. You can enforce features on an organization-wide basis with Group Policy, and since Firefox isnt, it cant be controlled in such ways. I must also mention that 99.999% of the benefits of controlling IE thru Group Policy are security and limiting functionality, which wouldnt have to be done in the first place if IE wasnt A PART OF THE WINDOWS CORE!!!
Yes, firefox has had security problems, but they usually apply those fixes within a day or two of the problem being discovered, theyre far less critical, and due to FF not being a part of the windows core, someone hijacking your browser with malicious code has far less access to your system, and has to try alot harder to execute malicious code. This is independent of the fact that firefox is not the most popular browser, its because it is not a part of windows.
If you can use linux, go for it, if you cant, stick with Mac or Windows, but dont come here preaching that one is better than the other by using half-truths or listing the features that one has that the other doesnt, because if you want to get all-inclusive, you'’ll be here for longer than it takes to produce a new version of Windows before you “convert” anyone.
The truth is, Windows is likely to be the most popular OS, and its IE browser to be the msot popular browser, because 99% of the worlds computer users dont know the difference, and dont know how to install a program.
Oh, and to all the Windows/IE fanboys out there - It is entirely possible to never get a virus and use nothing but IE6 and windows 2000 without a firewall or antivirus software by the way, all you have to do is not connect to the internet. Feel free to use that one to your advantage if you ever get in an argument with one of those Firefox or Mac fans, just dont include the second half of the argument.
Oh, and to all you Mac fanboys - It is entirely possible to do everything on a Mac as you can do in Windows, as long as you dont know how to administrate an international corporation’s corporate network sitting in a chair in front of a Windows Systems Management Server station. Feel free to include this as part of your argument, just leave out the second half.
Linux fans, yes, you probably can do everything in linux that you can do in windows, as long as somebody has developed code that they claim that does it and doesnt invade your privacy, etc, all you have to do is spend an hour compiling it on your system, figuring out how it works, and debugging it once you find out that it was written for Fedora and youre using Ubuntu.
Every piece of software is written a certain way for certain reasons people, wake up! Mac users dont typically need to control half a million corporate network stations from anywhere around the world, Windows users dont need a pretty interface or to know how anything they do works, as long as they know how to make sure their system is secure, because Microsoft wont do that for you, and Linux users, as long as they like wasting their time compiling and debugging code have no reason to use anything else, because you have all the free time in the world, apparently, otherwise you wouldnt spend so much time making sure you can keep up with the learning curve required to do some things a Mac or Windows user can accomplish with a double click.
Yes, i know this is nowhere near a complete picture of either system, but it gets a point across at least, different systems are effective at different things and require different input work in order to get there.
What do you have to gain out of other people who probably dont do the kind of stuff you do, using the same tools you use? Nothing. I dont give a damn what Mac users can/cant do, because i dont do those things, and i dont have the time to start learning how to use linux, and im not that good a programmer, all i know is i need to be able to do a vast variety of completely different things at any given time, and i know how to keep a windows system secure already, so i use windows. sue me.

Without firefox and it’s extensions, I wouldn’t find this page. IE isn’t all that great as it allows for average viewing habits, but it’s not really customizable. I personally use firefox. Here are some reasons why.
1. Safer–I haven’t had any viruses and I browse randomly. I need to install Anti-Virus software eventually though.
2. Extensions–The amount of extensions available makes it so that you could probably spend a couple weeks looking for awesome ways to make your browser better. The one I used to find this site is Stumble Upon.
3. The current version, 2.0, seems to have spell checker. This feature is excellent for anybody and makes it so that when typing an e-mail or anything, you can fix mistakes.
Is T-Bird good? I’m not sure. I’ve never tried it. I don’t really need it. If I did, I’d get Mozilla Suite Instead.
Why is IE part of the core of Windows? That seems to be unfair, as it lets the worst browser in my experience, be very powerful. I think that they should retire IE, and have FF or Opera be the basic starting one.

Here’s one of my favorites. […]

well, i read pretty much all the comments on this page; “FF is better”, “no ie is better”. You know what i think? you all need to get a life! big time! first of all, has ANYONE here heard of a antivirus program? or how about a firewall? and no, i’m not talkin about windows firewall. I’m talking about a firewall not included with the operating system (a firewall that you must buy seperatly from your os). Windows includes this firewall for a norm type of pertection…for the average user. In other words…it’s a hell of a lot easier to use if your not computer literate. Second, if you want a decent computer…BUILD ONE!!! BUILD A CUSTOM!!! You all sound perfactly capable of building one. It’s fun and supriseingly easy. it can also be pretty easy on the wallet too. when you buy a factory hp or Apple or IBM or whatever…most of the time everythings factory. Whereas a costom reflects you. If you like playing games, get a dual core (notice i didn’t say Duo core as in Intel…i’m trying to be nutral about everything), and a 1 gig Graphics card. Also, new processors have Data Execution Protection which helps agains virus threats. And finally, i would like to say to all the nerds like myself, building an operating system is mondo hard!!! their isn’t any operating system i prefer over another (after all, i am nutural in this matter) but for the people dissing windows and lunix and so on; heres what i have to say to you: Sure, Windows, ie, lunix, ff, ect., have a few problems and what operating system doesn’t. Some os and programs have their atvantages and their disatvantages. And If you don’t like the disadvantages of it…quit your bitching and try another operating system. Yes, windows may be a little overpriced, so if you don’t want to pay the money, go to something else. like Lunix or Ubuntu or something to that effect. don’t bitch about all its problems such as its ie and other security issues. your computer is only as smart as the person running it. And if your not smart enough to put a antivirus and a firewall on it…as well as with any other os, then you should not have an opinion on the matter. And there was one particular individual dissing Lunix. And although i am trying to be nurtal in the matter, if you think that any operating system is superior to another, or you feel the erge to put one down…build your own operating system. Maybe if you see how hard it is you’ll stop all your bosting. All operating systems are the same; what you use them for is what makes the difference. Every operating system has different things for different peoples needs wants and sometimes..their financial status. If anyone wants, i can give them sites for free os’s , trial firewalls, and trial antiviruses…just comment back.

Jeremy Brown says:
As for as activex and hijacking dangers in IE, you can install the latest version of SpyBot Search & Destroy, and set the TeaTimer program to run at startup.
It blacklists over 1100 known “bad guys” from ever getting loaded into memory, and gives you a dialog box every time an activex script is run, a program attempts to change the registry or something wants to be loaded at startup.
Although I prefer FF, SpyBot makes IE surfing a lot safer. The dialogs get annoying after awhile though, and if you dont shut down TeaTimer before installing a program like Nero Burning Rom, you may end up with a broken program.
If you must use IE, if you combine Avant Browser (just a wraparound shell for IE) with SpyBot’s resident TeaTimer, it really levels the playing field vs FF for security.
But yeah, if you like being notified of browser updates as soon as you start your browser, and not being asked to validate your software or install validation software to update it, FF is nice.

(i generally prefer debian and gentoo, but i’m a bit of a purist)
linux, i can safely say, is not harder; it’s just new and different and therefore SEEMS harder. trust me, it’s a lot less scary than it seems.

This is crazy, I read the first few comments and everyone is saying that Internet Explorer is so much better than Firefox. I disagree. I constantly update my internet browsers (including Internet Explorer) and my Internet Explorer is the slowest thing on my computer. Even slower than iTunes which I can eat an entire meal (a big meal too) in the time it takes to load. So all those retards using Internet Explorer, switch to Firefox.

SIGH…….
Safari is the fastest internet browser but it search dun always come up with what u need.
Internet explorer is what id call the most easy use browser but Firefox and Safari are faster.
I prefer Firefox because of its speed and its add ons. Cooliris is one of these add ons and i love it. Right from its main page you can chose to search under Google/You tube/and other things…i forgot lolz …..and it will come up with pictures which with word under them of all the things that come up from that search. Other add ons from Firefox can tell you what the weather is in your area or news or w/e you like. You can also choose your own them color (I chose the NASA theme cause its basically all black)…………………………..As for the best virus protection then i think 90% of people can agree the its Norton… if you don’t have it i suggest you get it.

Have you heard. Windows has a new keyboard which it wants to release with the next version of Windows. It only has 3 keys. They are “Ctrl, Alt and Del”. Keep up the good work Microsoft.

Nice article man, what really shocked me was the GROUP Rename!
I mean I can’t believe that most of the time I spent renaming files was a loss of time!
Good work man!
