IE7 Release on October 18?

As Jimmy wrote, you may not be ready for IE7, but it’s coming.   According to Neowin.net, there was a blurb on a MSDN blog entry that said October 18th was the day downloads would be available.  The text was:

The final release of Internet Explorer 7 is targeted for release October 18th …and will be delivered to customers via Automatic Updates starting November 1st, a few weeks after it’s available for download. Are your Web sites, extensions, and applications ready? Microsoft recommends that Web sites and applications be reviewed and made ready for the release of Internet Explorer 7 this month.”

We Say: I use the word was because the part about October release no longer appears in the blog post.  However, the text about Automatic release (meaning Windows Update, right?) on November 1 still appears there, sorta.  There’s now text that says “Microsoft recommends that enterprises are prepared for automatic delivery by November 1″.

Either way, release is fast approaching … and it’s probably going to be … er, interesting.

Yep - its here! Started using IE7 last night after it was offered in regular update. So far so good!

I like the slimmed down version of the top bar - lets you see more of the page. But it moves the fold up the page may need to adjust a few things to accommodate that. And the tabs for viewing other webpages at the same time are great. Plus search options on the page is very useful and being able to switch between seach engines. Impressive - at first take.

One of the most interesting aspects of the IE vs. Firefox battle is the development of the ecosystem of extensions or add-ons. It’s not just about bugs and features. Right now Firefox had a great advantage in this space but you can see Microsoft trying to catch up.

Microsoft has an interesting partner in Trailfire, a recommended download for IE7. See link:

But this extension is also available for Firefox. See link:

I think the ecosystem for Firefox and IE will decide who wins this battle.

    What do you think?
