Samsung CLP-300: Smallest Personal Color Laser Printer

By Alice Hill
RealTechNews
We have always said that Samsung is the new Sony, but who knew it would also be the new HP? The Samsung CLP-300 is the world’s smallest color laser printer to date, with an equally small slightly sub-$300 USD price tag. The printer measures a trim 15.4 inch (W) by 13.5 inch (H) by 10.4 inch (D) and does 17 pages per minute (ppm) in black and white and 4 ppm in color.
We Say: Slow print speed in color mode and odd toner bottles make this the Gillette of the personal laser world, but the price and the size is nice. Source: Samsung via Gizmodo

Dave Barnes says:
As the very happy owner of a Samsung CLP-500N which has worked perfectly for over a year in my Mac (and Windows) office, I think the CLP-300 looks great.
For $299 you should not expect great speed. But, it is only $299. Color. Laser.

Hey Dave - thanks for that. How expensive was the toner?

Dave Barnes says:
Toner cartridges are $130 each. A 4-pack is is $505. I found that when the first cartridge went to empty the others followed soon after. I got 26 months out the original cartridges.
This is an excellent printer in my opinion. (However, it is not a photo printer.)

“the Gillette of the personal laser world”
Huh?

Alice says:
Gillette pioneered the concept of giving the razor away (or close to it) and then making a fortune off of the blades. Ink jets are known for this - the printers are dirt cheap but you quickly out-spend the cost of the printer by buying new ink catridges that have to fit that model.

Aha! Gotcha! A $300 printer that takes $500 worth of toner. Just like inkjets, cheaper to buy than maintain. Bic should do to printers what they did to razors: make ‘em disposable and sell them in five packs.

Dave Barnes says:
Lewie,
It is my $700 (at the time) CLP-500N that uses a 4-pack of cartridges for $500.
I think $500 for 26 months of printing is very reasonable. I mean, $20/mo in a SOHO environment (where we never think about the cost of printing a page) seems reasonable.
I have no idea how much the 4-pack of cartridges for this new $300 printer will cost.

Travis Jones says:
the toners for these printers are quite reasonable 57.99 for the black and 49.99 for the colors
each color toner module is good for 1,000 pages and the black good for 2,000
while i like the size of the samsung, the machine is outdone entirely by the slightly bigger OKI 3400cn

Samsung says:
Its a lot more lighter than the competition and the toner bottles are much easier to store than the bulkly conventional laser type. Also less noise because of no-Nois technology
