Average American home has more TVs than people

By Chief Gadgeteer, Gizmos for Geeks

This isn’t a completely surprising headline: there are 2.73 TV sets compared with 2.55 people in the typical American home. The statistic that I would like to see is how many computers there are in the average home. For comparison, my 2 person household only has 2 televisions, but 7 computers! Ok, I’ll admit that not all of those computers are used equally, and I’m a computer geek, but still. If you think of your computers as televisions or video transports (how many YouTube vids or movies have you seen on your computer?), then the above stat goes up.

Not surprising. My house even has more microwaves than people.

Lets see…. 4 computers for 3 adults, 5 tvs- 2 of which are hdtv widescreens, 3 vcr’s, 2 tivo’s, 4 dvd players, 2 playstations. 2 high speed internet lines into the house. Ah yes, technology is wonderful. And to think I grew up watching 13 channels of tv on a 13 color tv. No computer, no VCR. A combination 8-Track/ FM deck with 2 stereo speakers for additional entertainment.

Particularly if you use a PC instead of a TV.

I’m running Snapstream at home, on a dedicated box w/ 6 tuners. And I watch virtually all my TV on my desktop PC. I only turn the real TV on, for news in the AM while I get ready for work.
