It’s Your Fault!

Let’s not mince words shall we? Dell has laid the “blame” for their laptop battery recall, affecting over 4 million batteries, squarely on Sony’s shoulders.
“We know exactly why there was a problem. Sony had contaminated its cells in the manufacturing process,” Dell told ZDNet UK at the company’s Technology Day event here on Tuesday.
However, a Sony representative denied that the blame for Dell’s battery cell problems lay completely with the Japanese manufacturer. “It is the configuration. We use the same batteries in our Vaios, and have our own safeguards against potential overheating. ” Source: News.com
We Say: Dell’s statement was in response to assertions by Sony, somewhat indicated in the statement above from the Sony rep, that it was the way Dell integrates the battery cells into its PC design which caused more susceptibility for Dell laptops. Of course, this does not explain at all the Apple recall, does it?

John Corliss says:
This kind of thing is indicative of what the entirety of American industry is going through. Yarding out the production of part to foreign competitors simply goes against common sense, but greed in the form of “cost cutting” overcomes common sense every time.

Actually, it does. Apple and Dell both sub-contract manufactuirng of thier laptops to companies in China and Taiwan. A little googling found me this:

and this:

So Dell and Apple have at least Quanta as a common source for finished products.

First, in response to John C., I think it important to point out that Dell and technology companies of any size operate in a global marketplace where cost reductions are not “greed” but a normal part of any product cycle.
Second, my company and others involved with the global trade group IPC are collaborating to develop a standard for lithium-ion battery manufacturing and quality control that will be an order of magnitude better than the current industry practices.
