Nintendo Wii Launches in the US November 20 for $250

RealTechNews
It’s official. The next salvo in the console wars has been fired: The Seattle PI “accidently” leaked the launch date and price point for its next generation console, the oddly named Nintendo Wii. According to the leak, the Wii launches on November 19, 2006 for a price of $250 USD. Today the new website for the Wii also went live. (Click here to check out Wii.com)
To come with Wii Sports, which includes golf, bowling, baseball and tennis games controlled by swinging the wii-mote. 25 titles available by end of year. 30 classic games, including Zelda, Super Mario Bros. and Donkey Kong. Source: Gizmodo
We Say: While Sony struggles with a spiraling price tag and delays, and the Xbox 360 works on keeping the momentum of last year’s head start, we think it may be Nintendo who steals the show this round. And They Say: Why’s laughing now, punk?

Arggghh..we have had a problem with our site. I posted this three times and this last one has the launch date as the 20th and not the 19th. Sorry everyone. When you edit, it deletes.

I heard that the games for the Wi are going to be geared for family entertainment and resemble the GameCube graphics more than anything. Therefore, why would it be any suprise that the price point is lower when the graphics are not going to be as lifelike as the XBox360 and the PS3? I think the latter systems will do far better since thier games will not resemble “Cartoons” as much.

And Old Faithful Nintendo comes through to the finish strong! I find it funny how people dump on Nintendo these days all the time and get arrogant about their consoles. But these inexperienced “kids” fail to realize that tenure and experience say alot, and if anyone has experience, it’s most definitely Nintendo. Futhermore, I’ll be using that extra $300 I save from not buying a PS3 for taking out the girls that the people who buy PS3’s can’t afford to take out. See ya >:D
P.S. And..they like Super Mario Bros. better than Halo anyway…

That controller looks difficult to figure out but the price is right. I can’t believe how far behind sony is falling. Hmmm $600 and possibly wait for spring or $250 and wait for November. I love the playstation but come on guys http://www.angelfire.com/theforce/indermsbut

Somehow, do you believe that current gen systems cannot render a game that looks realistic and not cartoon-like? Oh my God! My character doesn’t have skin pores! The Ground surface is textured and not 3-D rendered! How can I possibly play this game??!! I think the difference in price will help the Wii sell with lesser graphics.

David says:
If you’re unfamiliar with the controller, you aren’t supposed to use those 3 central buttons during a game, and the two at the bottom are only used when you hold the controller on it’s side. The main unit only uses that large A button, and a trigger B button on the underside.

I think it’s a sign of teh world we live in where the automatic assumption of lesser graphics than other consoles means that the Wii will struggle.Truly the graphics are there to illustrate the story or the goal of the game, and it is the content and originality of games that sells, not just the graphics.
And Nintendo have always searched for the most interesting stories and takes on gameplay, i feel that the cheaper price and earlier release will lead more people away from the floundering Playstation.
If they aren’t fanboys who cant wait to cuddle up and spoon their newest sony produce.

Sign me up. I’m holding out for Halo 3 on the Xbox 360, but I think I’ll sign up for a Wii. It’d be cool to be able to play Mario and other games without the whole Modded Xbox thing going on.

Price Point Polka
Nintendo continues to roil the game space waters and confound predictors of its imminent demise, this time with a “leaked” announcement of a launch date and price point. $250, available early November. Can you say, “the next frenzy toy…

This looks like crap. They’ll need a better controller to make any sports game (half the market) fun to play. And the thing looks like an iMac or something, not that that matters. And sxan, glad you can afford to take out a girl, but lets see you get a date.

The Gamecube released at $200.
So this is more expensive. Sure, compared to 360 and PS3, it’s cheap, but it’s more expensive than the last gen.

Benjamin Carey says:
So what if the graphics aren’t as detailed as the PS3 or the XBox, that’s not the issue, they don’t try to compete on graphics. The Wii is going to be better because of improve useability and game desgin. Some people who are far too self concious to play a “cartoonish” mario game as opposed to Halo 3 forgot one fact, Mario is ****ing deadly fun.

Tallen says:
Yeah, it’s more expensive than the game cube, but tacking on 1/4 of the last system’s price compared to Sony Doubling the price of their last system and MS tacking on over a third of the cost of their last system, it’s very cheap. As for graphics, if I want to see things that look realistic, I go outside.

Zac says:
I don’t know about the rest of the world but I am pretty tired of playing the same games only with better graphics. If I wanna see something thats pretty and realistic I’ll walk out my front door. Sony as a company is banking on the system doing well, when they announced the delay in europe their stock price fell along with everyone else’s that is involved with the PS3. If I got 600$ to blow I’ll just hook up my comp with some Dual SLI cards.

Having demoed it, I loved the controller. As far as graphics goes: pretty graphics mean nothing if that’s all there is to the game. Nintendo, time and again, has proven that overall quality means more than the pixels used on create a life-like looking bimbo, and the lousy looking PS games that should never sell but do so like gang busters prove that too: it isn’t about the grass that grows under the feet, or the foot prints you leave behind in the sand. If I wanted a game solely for graphical purposes, for any platform, I would buy “Watching Grass Grow 64″.

The new Wii looks like the next big thing to come out of the gaming industry. There is a common misconception in the gaming world that graphis are all that matter. Unfortunately many of the games out right now with flashy graphics are not replayable. Let me ask you all something, how often do you replay most of your games. I have a funny feeling you will all say “I play Halo non stop” but ask yourselves this “what other games do you replay?” Your typical action game has no replay value, in my opinion civilization was the greatest game ever created, and it has sub par graphics. It’s the greatest becuase of it’s replay value, I to date have replayed every civ game atleast 1 million times totaling hundeds of millions of hours. Countless others around the world could also say the same. Getting back to my main point, graphics mean nothing, replay value is all that matters.

Nintendo aren’t actaully competing with Sony or Microsoft. They make their bread and butter on handhelds, and the Wii is a totally new kind of system. It’s not for gamers, it’s for a whole new market that only Nintendo seems to have realised existed. More power to them, I hope it’s a huge success.

Dropping 60 bucks on a next gen console game, I would like some replayability out of it. I understand that most games are supposed to be 10 to 20 hours of gaming? Bugger that. I would settle for a 10 hour game that had real replayability, either downloadable free addons or some fun mulitplayer capabilities or something to keep me coming back.
