AOL - The Good Hands People

I think RTN needs some data insurance, as this story was here yesterday … the site crashed, and here I am writing it again. But that’s a nice segway anyway. AOL is now offering ID theft and computer damage insurance … free … well, for its paying customers anyway … and I admit that’s a dwindling group.

The insurance, offered through American International Group Inc., pledges up to $10,000 to help restore users’ identity and credit regardless of how their Social Security number, bank account or other personal information got compromised. A separate AIG policy covers up to $1,000 to repair or replace computers that suffer physical damage. Source: Washington Post

We Say: I was thinking the ID theft insurance would be really helpful for some people (considering how AOL has trouble keeping info off the Internet). On the other hand, AOL definitely needs to get some revenue … granted the majority will now be ad-based, but still.

As a sidenote, I noticed Xdrive was down Monday. It’s now up again, and free (I figured they took it down to set up the free service). That’s something I most like will use.

AOL offering ID theft insurance, free email… and the kitchen sink. AOL’s dwindling brand and what they’ve been doing to remain relevant is far from the media/search/IM/email darling they once were in the 1990s http://www.essentialsecurity.com/Documents/article22.htm

It seems like a lot of this backtracking comes after that 650,000 release of AOL user searches.

A Segway is a goofy looking two-wheeled thing that you ride. A segue, on the other hand, is an idea or thought that serves as a transition device in writing or speaking.
