Light-Emitting Shirts from Philips
We Say: This looks like the high-tech version of those glow sticks. But a digital clock on your sleeve could make a cool watch. Interesting.

Interesting tech. While having clothing like that for your personal wardrobe screams faux pas, the commercial applications are endless - and very cool. You could have dynamic names and numbers in seats, or create really good publicity t-shirts… and the idea of a sleeve-integrated watch is simply awesome.

Alice Hill says:
I agree. The t-shirts are the worst thing to show. I get why at a trade show, but long term the theater seats and marketing items - that is something.

Amanda says:
This is frightening. I think people have more important things to do than come up with stupid ideas like illuminated t-shirts and marketing items. Where is the humanity? Where?
And why don’t I get paid to come up with stupid crap like this?

Fine… Phillips is infested with high-tech hippies. This is as quirky as gold fish earrings. Maybe there are commercial applications, but the only people I can imagine wanting it are kids that want ANYTHING that emitts light (for instance, those damned blinking shoes). The only adults that would want to be a walking light show are people starved for attention, and need counseling.

Slashdot awhile back linked up news that Phillips had created shirts that were self-illuminating, but Fark linked up actual video. First impression: more living science fiction. Second: Doesn’t look like it’s all that bright, note every shot is very…

I can see lots of interesting specialized applications like POLICE or FBI shirts that only glow after the arrest starts, the runner/bicycle idea, etc. How about light-show concert t-shirts? I wouldn’t be caught dead in one myself. Phillips will make millions.

you could use it to call people dirty names if you can control when it turns on and what it “says.”
see someone do something stupid and call them an appropriate name on your shirt as you walk past them in a store or something…

The new Philips product look very interesting and I would like to get some further information on the new product and when it is available and how much it costs in what format. We are a major dealer and do a ton of Broadcast TV. Please get back to me with a phone number for someone at Philips and a contact name.
Thank you for your help.

not everybody can or wants work on the improvment of humanity, asshole.
“And why don’t I get paid to come up with stupid crap like this?”
because you’re a moron, and anything you would make would be considered “stupid crap” by many people. i think this is an awsome technology that will only get better.

If these things catch on…
And hopefully get cheaper, (you know they gotta be a fortune right now) I wonder if they will be customizable, like coming with a kit?
I know LED belts are, and so are the LED wheels for your car which make pictures as they spin. Side Note: If they were, you could seriously cosplay Phantasy Star Universe, with all their glowing outfits.
It also looks like the ‘lightshow’ is only in one area (for now) but I can see it spreading around to the whole garment as the technology evolves.
They’re also showing it on home furnishings, which wouldn’t be bad if say…you turned on your pillow and kept it as a night light. (Remember those GlowWorms toys?) If the stuff is “step on able” you could do a rug that gives you directions in a large building–like the wall in startrek.
Before homes, I bet it goes into car seats though, because “glow+car=awesome” in many opinions. (neon underglow, LED wheels, LED washer fluid things, LED licensplate frames…etc) Quirky but interesting.

I like it. I can see many applications on the commercial side as well as the personal use side.
My prediction is this will hit big when the first big budget movie grabs hold of it, and uses it for promotion. Then the public will take notice.

What a boon for the safety/law enforcement field. Life vests, clothing etc that can be seen at a distance. This could be revolutionary. Where are the batteries? How long will they last?

i think this is the greatest invention in the fashion world. just imagine the world where everybody is wearing these shirts. i mean a lady wearing a dress on which butterflies are flying. or a man wearing a tshirt with a beach scenery which is waving with wind.
and i dont think they should be so bright that you can use them as torch. they should be bright enough just to create a picture.

and ya to all the morons who are saying that its just to catch attention……
every cloth u wear is a way to get attention or feel good. otherwise just for basic needs, one pair of hideous short and one cheap tshirt is enough.
