Sony Hypes PS3 and Blu-Ray … But No HDMI Cable?

PlayStation 3

By Michael Santo
Executive Editor, RealTechNews

Sony’s been hyping the 1080p goodness of the $600 version of the PS3 … but in order to use this, you have to have an HDMI cable, right? Normally when I buy something that costs $600, I expect it to work out of the box. Hard for that to happen when the box doesn’t include the cable.

The only problem is that the HDMI cable needed to do this won’t be included with your $600 PS3. That means, according to prices on places like Amazon, you’ll have to shell out an extra $40 or more for the needed HD hook up. Source: JoyStiq

We Say: If I’ve paid that much already, the $40 isn’t the issue. What is the issue is that if I hadn’t read about this, I would have been seriously disappointed … and most likely would be rushing out to buy it the day the box was opened.

  2. Alice says:

And keep in mind, if you want to get a high end HDMI cable, the price is more like $100 than $40, which means Sony’s hiding about 10% of the actual price by burying the added cost in the fine print.

That is beyond ludicrous. Gotta hand it to the marketing geniuses behind that ploy, though. You get the shaft without KY, they get richer.

Monoprice.com has HDMI cables priced at around 3-4 dollars.

    Yes, I bought them

Yes, they work the same as the 80 dollar version.

Yes, we are routinely gouged with new technology products that really cost nothing for them to manufacture.

“High-end HDMI cable?” A digital signal is a digital signal is a digital signal. Only a moron thinks they’re getting better PQ for more money with digital cables. A $4 HDMI cable from monoprice.com will produce the exact same image as a $150 Monster HDMI cable.

uh, if you have an HD TV, then you probably will need an HDMI cable at some point. When you buy several-thousand dollar toys, you expect to pay for expensive accessories. You buy a car, expect to pay the price over again in maintenance and oil changes. Welcome to the real world.

    Get a job, hippy.

The HDMI cable doesn’t come with your HD Cable box, satellite receiver, up converting DVD player or anything else. It’s nothing new. The cables are expensive and you don’t need one. Very few people have a 1080p display anyway. Only the new LCD or DLP have 1080p, no plasmas do. Would want to pay another $100 for the PS3 just for a cable that won’t do you any good?

So if I dont have a HD TV it is not worth getting the system. 600 bucks is a crap load of dough to dump into a system that is going to have bugs for the first generation system.

  9. Bill says:

Well, if ppl would pay more attention and then not dish out 600.00 for something that is incomplete, Sony would have to recall/repackage their stuff…

Meanwhile 600.00 for a video game, that does nothing unless you shell out more money for the cd/dvd to play in it, is completly ridicilous. People need to get a grip on reality here.

People need to come to the point and understnad that technology is advancing so fast, and at this time things work/look/fell so good that no matter how much more advanced the technology is it is lost to the human eye/ear because we only see/hear so well.

Yea, so? What about the loads of people that don’t need it for HD? It’s not like it won’t operate one way or another, and you know if it was included the price would be much higher, even if it only costs them $4 to make or buy from somebody else, it could be a signicantly higher price for the PS3.

It WILL work out of box, just not with the 1080p

I would be more worried about the price of games. PS2 had them at $50+ starting, and I hope PS3 doesn’t make the prices get any higher.

Bunch of tools. HDMI cables DO come in the box with upconverting DVD players and HD SAT boxes. And no, you’re not getting the same quality from a $4 cable as you are with a $150 cable. If you didn’t buy cheap ass shit you would see the difference. Dickless.

    September 4th, 2006 at 10:06 am

  13. Mark says:

Um… Mike. I suggest you check out Oppo. Their upconverting DVD players come with both a DVI-DVI and a DVI-HDMI cable, and the player is only $200.

  14. Shippou says:

    In response to #7:

With the PS3, you’re actively paying $100 more for the inclusion of 40GB more of hard drive space and for the HDMI port. The price difference between a 20GB drive and a 60GB drive is roughly $10, so we can assume that you’re paying $90 more for this HDMI port. If you’re paying this much for the port, why won’t they include a $1-$3 (at cost) cable that is neccessary to take advantage of the $90 upgrade you bought? Especially since Blu-Ray will only output in full resolution with the HDMI cable. Blu-Ray, if you’ll remember, is the most expensive component of the PS3. It’s all just price gouging and cornholing by Sony. And nearly everyone is sick of it.

My HD cable box came with cables… so yeah

    September 4th, 2006 at 10:16 am

  17. Josh says:

Yeah, it’s a cable for a standard most people don’t need to use, a resolution many modern HDTV’s don’t even support and will cost you $10 to pick up should you decide to get one (even Amazon has them for as low as $25).

HDMI cables are especially gouged right now because so few people actually have a need for them.

Course, the 360 doesn’t even really support high definition media without a not yet released drive and last I heard the HD-DVD add on won’t even have an HDMI port … much less a cable.

But these days, Sony bashing is much more interesting than reality, it seems.

Brand of cable? Doesn’t matter. Have a 42″ HDTV with HD digital cable and an HDMI DVD both connected with HDMI cables, alll audio is connected with digital coax or optical, etc,… anyways, the cheapHDTV cables work absolutly fine. The “$40″ thing is kind of an exxageration, and jut trying to get more people riled up by the article so someone can feelthey wrote a good piece (the title “get ready to spend 5 more bucks”isn’t as oanic inducing). Any unless you’ve bought a PS3 yet, you have no idea if Sony has any plans to get the word out on release day.

RE: Mike’s comment that equipment doesn’t normally come with HDMI cables. Both of my HDTVs did, as did my HD cable box. Also, when I had Voom HD Sattellite, it came with HDMI cables. I have a TON of HDMI cables hanging out that I got free with the equipment.

Now, that being said, while I think Sony is being totally dickless with this nonsense, it ISN’T super expensive to grab an HDMI cable. They all work fine, and the improvement with the more expensive cables is only noticable on very high end and large-scale HD televisions and projectors. If you have convinced yourself otherwise, you are simply wasting scads of cash.

Enh, my father recently purchased a Samsung 42″ and Sony 46″ HD LCD television sets which were both well over $2,000 and they didn’t come with HDMI. Neither did the DVD players (that offered HDMI) that we bought to go with them. I wouldn’t expect the PS3 to have it either since the cables are fairly expensive and so few people actually have HDMI-capable television sets right now.

My girlfriend works for Best Buy and has revealed the truth behind ‘cables’. She said the mark up is incredible. For us if an accessory costs us $40, her employee price is $2-3 dollars. Or challenge them by saying you’ll only pay 10% of the list price for any cables or you don’t walk out the door without your big ticket item.

  28. Dave says:

Actually, my upscanning DVD player DID come with an HDMI cable. Why would Sony cheap out by not including a $5 cable? It isn’t just the cost to the consumer, but the inconvienence of having to go out AGAIN and get the cables needed…

  29. gyoza says:

I remember when you bought a camera, it came with case, tripod, and a pile of the accessories that cost $10 each now. The thing that toasts me about this is that sony must have a supply line for these ‘high quality’ hdmi cables, and would be able to pack one in at a fraction of the cost that best buy will ream the consumer for come release time.

My $400 Sony DVR came with an HDMI cable and a plug to convert it to DVI. DOH! I guess that means I already have one!

I’ve also bought $200 to $300 flat panel monitors that came with DVI cables which are about the same price as HDMI.

To offer a “premium” system and not include the proper cables is just plain asinine.

I purchased a PS2 the first day it came out (top of the pre-order list) but with the PS3 I doubt i will be acquiring one within the first year, there is nothing revolutionary enough about this machine to justify my shelling out $600. Especially when the first batch of any new electronic product tends to be bug-laden.

  32. Nice Sony... says:

Yeah, it is one of the classic, “You scratch my back I’ll scratch yours” situations. Beware the “cheaper” HDMI cables. Like the DVI cable for high end flat panals you get what you pay for. I bought a cheap HDMI cable as opposed to paying 65 dollars for one at Best Buy and the video quality looked like crap. (hardly Hi-Def) I didn’t realize there were different grades of these cables. I’ll just bite the bullet and buy an expensive one next time because I’ll end up needing it anyway. Read the fine print on the boxes of the cables and you’ll see the bandwidth specs and such….

I’ll just drop 600 bucks on my gaming computer and call it a day. Consoles aren’t worth that.

Jeez, get a more honest business model people.

  35. Wellinformed says:

Cable length is the main factor. Do you include a 3 meter cable for everyone when your setup requires a 6 meter run? Or, do you include a 6 meter cable for someone that only needs a 1 meter cable? Now, they have all this extra cable hanging on the floor. That is too much of a headache! Just let everyone get the length of cable they need. Does it make sense to you now?

AfroX - “…there is nothing revolutionary enough about this machine to justify my shelling out $600.”

The PS3 is on equal status with the PS2, when the PS2 came out (maybe even more so). The PS2 was considered priced too high at launch. The PS3 is considered priced too high for launch (despite only $100 difference between the consoles–feature for feature–the PS3 is much cheaper than the Xbox 360). Plus, if having a small supercomputer in your home is not revolutionary enough (on top of everything else), then almost nothing is.

Does anyone reading this article actually have a real 1080p capable display to use it on? No, since aside from a few projectors and unbelievably expensive panels they’re all 720p/1080i displays… for which the lower signal loss and higher noise rejection on coax makes component a better solution than the twisted pair HDMI and DVI cables, especially for runs over 6 feet. So unless you actually have a 1080p dispaly, it’s irrelevant, and who cares.

  39. ViGamEx says:

@12 - you are toy soldier in the console war! why would it make your Wii any better if sony or ms are “buried”? why is it that there is only one console/manufacturer allowed to be on the market again? sorry i just don’t get why there is not enough room for all of them out there…and hey if people buy the xbox 360 even though it is not backwards compatible (which is only partly true) then fine, if they are willing to spend 600 bucks for a better blu-ray drive (the ps3 that is) with a ps2 on top (still the ps3) then please let them be. we at ViGamEx are PS3 fans, still i bought a DS instead of a PSP, i also own a gamecube. so i think there’s room for all of them. so please let the people (the market) decide what they want to buy and what not.

I’ll stick to my original Xbox.

  52. joe says:

There is a demonstrable difference between cheap and expensive HDMI cables. The “digital is digital” arguement is voided by the simple fact that not all cable can transmit the same amount of data and at specific bit rates(bandwidth). Version 1.3 HDMI(which will be on the PS3) is going to have over 2x the bandwidth of current 1.2 HDMI. Products from companies like Mcintosh, Krell, Primare, etc can cost upwards of $15-100k and they include $0 worth of cables. Learn about the products you want to bash, and learn about the technology required to take full advantage of that technology before making comments like cables don’t matter, and Sony sucks. This isn’t your moms Atari 2600, it’s the PS3-do an inflation adjusted price on the two.. surprise!

  53. Baron says:

It would be economically unrealistic for Sony to include an HDMI cable with their system since so few people have a TV that could use it. If the PS3 haters don’t want to buy one because of the price, then fucking don’t. It’s a high-end device with high-end parts. If you don’t want the new standard in home entertainment, go buy your 360 or Wii and shut up. Don’t whine about the cost of a Ferrari or Dauer 962 LeMans because you can get a riced-up Civic for less.

Head to the PS3 forums at Shakefire.com if you think i’m full of crap. We’ll talk.

Thats not completely true. Although its a digital signal, HDMI does not have error correction built in so a poor quality cable will lose bits over a long connection. Bits that will never be seen again. Granted a 4′ or 6′ cable will probably be fine with a cheap one but buying quality for a 20′ cable is worth it.

There is definatley a difference between a $4 cheap-o HDMI cable and a high quality one; anyone who tells you otherwise either can’t tell the difference, or is cheap and wants to make themselves feel better about it (or is selling cheap-o cables themselves and using this forum to advertise)
The larger difference comes in between the high-end cables. Monster cables are good, however their branding drove the prices to ridiculous levels. Other brands such as Comprehensive don’t spend as much on advertising, hence less expnsive cables. They just came out with a new eXtreme High Definition line of cables which I’m running in my home theater. I dropped the $$ on my nice system, why would I want to throw a crappy cable in there?

  60. Josh 2 says:

As said above, comment 9, these cables are pretty expensive and not too many people have 1080p TVs. Basically, if Sony were to include a cable, it would be for the 0.5% of people who own HDMI sets. If a cable costs $40 as you say, this would probably be reflected in the price. Anyone that has a knowledge of the video game industry knows that Sony is actually taking a pretty big hit on each PS3 sold (one estimate indicates the cost of manufacturing one PS3 to be $800). Maybe they should just sell it at $800? Anyhow, the price of the PS3 may become even higher than it already is so the people that are spending $2,000+ on TVs don’t have to pay an extra few bucks for a new cable. Meanwhile, those of us who can barely afford the PS3 as it is, and are using a $300 TV, are paying extra for something we MAY use 5 years from now when we can afford an LCD or DLP set. I personally think that only the cable most likely to be used, in this case the standard RCA AV cables, should be included. Anyone wanting more than the basic should, in my opinion, have to pay more. If you want more than just a basic TV set, then pay more for the cable.

Maybe Sony blundered be even including Blu-Ray, but I think they were looking more long-term than short. As people buy the higher-resolution sets, Sony expects them to upgrade their cables accordingly, rather than hunting down that extra cable that came with the PS3 that they probably lost or threw out.

In conclusion, screw you. You are complainging about an extra $40 cable to go along with your $2000+ TV set and $600 PS3 when I am happy that I can afford a (hopefully under $200) Wii when it comes out. Sony is perfectly justified in leaving out that cable, and I don’t care how disappointed you would have been if you hadn’t read something that you should have read anyhow. Quit being a whiny, spoiled b—- and go buy the cable. Better make sure batteries are included with the wireless controllers too. That would probably put a damper on your “OMG it just came out today and I have to have everything set up perfectly because I’m so impatient I can’t wait another day!”

    Gee…

I guess I might just take the cable that came with my Toshiba HD-A1 (the new HD-DVD player w/ HDMI cable included at $499.00) and try out the PS3 on my oh so rare Samsung 1080p DLP Rear Projection TV.

Naw never mind….the H-DVD looks better than BR…and the player is 1/2 the price….Maybe I just skip the Blue Ray hype altogether.

Oh did i mention HD-DVD looks better than Blu Ray. Sorry Sony.

“High-end HDMI cable?” A digital signal is a digital signal is a digital signal. Only a moron thinks they’re getting better PQ for more money with digital cables. A $4 HDMI cable from monoprice.com will produce the exact same image as a $150 Monster HDMI cable.

josh - wrong. Data loss occurs in any and all kinds of cables ~ it is irrelevant whether the signal is digital or analog. A cheap HDMI cable with crappy shielding is no better than a cheap RCA cable with crappy shielding. Corrupted digital data is dealt with by the intelligence of the end-receiving component all the time. If it wasn’t it, the picture would completely break the moment a single illicit bit was read. The better the cable, the less correction the receiver needs to make — the more accurate the picture is to the raw source data.

“Monoprice.com has HDMI cables priced at around 3-4 dollars.”

Thats right, ppl need to get it in their heads that as long as the cable is less than 2m long there is no difference between the cheap hdmi cables & the expensive ones.
Sony are not the only ones ripping ppl off, its scandalous that companies are selling hdmi cables for $100+ & ppl are buying them thinking they are “superior”.

As Bush eloquently put it “fool me once shame on…er…shame on U. Fool me…er fool…er aint gunna fool me again”.

Biggest shame is the worlds full of ppl like him ;p

First off only diff between expensive cables and high end cables is generally better insulation to interference and what not.
Without the cable the PS3 works out of the box just to get the 1080p you need a better cable.
And best of all at $600 for a PS3 its a bargan because a stand alone Blue-ray dvd player should put u back somewhere in the range of o yea $1000+. All gaming companies lose money on the gaming system itself but make up in game and accessory sales.

you people complain too much. there is no greater conspiracy get a life.

Some months ago I purchased an eMachines computer with WinXP installed. But, no restoration disk was included. Recently I needed such a restoraton disk. After many telephone calls to eMachines tech help (they won’t provide the disk through an internet connection), I finally made a connection and was told the price would be $20 for “shipping and handling”. Add long distance for all the time on hold and the total came to some $30. And, the cost to eMachines to include the disk with the computer? Peanuts! As a result and other problems with them, I have added eMachines to my blacklist. Sony has earned listing also, considering all its many cheap tricks of late. I make it a policy to stick to my guns on that blacklist issue and never buy from them. And, I haven’t suffered in the slightest for it. If even the majority of customers stuck to their guns to a blacklist of sort there would a radical change in these policies in very short order.

well, i think it’s pretty cheap for a console product, “specially maded by SONY” for giving us a brand new hi-tech media such as blu-ray player that included in a brand new game console…for me, that’s a great sacrifices for sony for giving us a cheap blu-ray player+game console…i just want u to know that the real price for sony bluray player is about us$1000.
