PhatSketch Turns Your Smartphone into an Etch-a-Sketch

While mobile phone companies are busy loading up handsets with video and games and a bunch of shopping links we would never, ever use, a little company called PhatWare has developed an app that may be what solitaire was to the PC. PhatSketch turns you smartphone into an Etch-a Sketch.

It helps if you can draw, which as you will see from my sketch that I cannot, but the app has all sorts of little bells and whistles you’ll enjoy. I changed my paper color to “RealTechNews orange,” tried custom ink colors, and brush stroke thicknesses, and mastered the diagonal line by setting endpoints and then connecting them to make the “n” in RTN.

True, it took a lot of time (far more than I will admit) and I definitely looked retarded while drawing my masterpiece, but it was fun and I cannot wait to fire this up at the airport while I wait for yet another cavity search.

We Say: Fun. Maybe not Phat, but PhatWare’s little app is a nice time killer and it beats playing Breakout for the 100th time. $9.95. Some Caveats: it stinks that they don’t support the Treo (Palm version) or Blackberry, and the best part of the Etch-a-Sketch experience is shaking the damn thing to start over. I shook my phone for many a reason, but having it erase would be truly phat!

I’ve used their PhatNotes and PhatPad on my Axim X5 for almost as long as I’ve had the beastie - PhatWare’s stuff always seems to rock!
