Beautiful example of what happens when companies outsource "customer service" to the retards in Boogieland so they can drop a few bucks to the bottom line. Ross Perot was RIGHT. (Look it up.)

How wrong would it be of me to tell you all how to click 7 times and delete the activation code entirely from your registry and never need to re-activate your windows again and still receive all the updates? this is not a "ms" issue...if you paid for the stuff..it's yours. changing things in your registry is not illegal. or hard..just make a backup if you don't know exactly what you are doing..:)

[...] Page Summary: Tonight, however, was the first time that many of my misgivings over the activation process were realized and validated. However, the laptop came to me after having suffered through the ravages of years of (ab)use and many viruses, so I decided the quickest, most painless way to shape it up was to reinstall Windows. The second option is, of course, illegal and will force my neighbors to shun the traditional Windows Update service. Someone already mentioned to maybe play it safe, so you might suggest the kid tries Linux, Ubuntu is is just to inviting to ignore it.read more | digg story [...]

I have experienced this problem several times with DELL computers. I have used an OEM CD, which ironically came with a Compaq, to reinstall Windows XP Home on other compaqs, HP's, VPR Matrix, and several other brands, using their OEM keys with this OEM CD that came with my compaq. I attempted this process on a dell with a new hard drive and no partitions. only to have the key on the dell flagged as an invalid key. I have had this problem with several machines since, (mostly Dell's), and I even discovered this same problem on a Dell optiplex with XP Professional. I tried to reinstall the operating system using the dell supplied XP Professional Installation CD (note, this is not a recovery CD but a full copy of XP Professional OEM), and the dell provided CD key. This key was also flagged as invalid from day one, although the running image on the machine never had issues of any type.

As far as any of this goes, does it really surprise you that the activation process can be such a headache, when Microsoft's update servers occasionally flag legitimate copies of windows as pirated, and allow pirate keys to download updates?
