Turn Up the Heat: Dell to Recall Millions of Laptop Batteries

Dell Laptop on Fire

By Michael Santo
Contributing Writer, RealTechNews

Dell Inc. said today it will recall 4.1 million notebook computer batteries because they can overheat and catch fire. No idea if this is related to earlier stories on Dell laptops catching fire but 4.1 million is a ton of batteries.

The batteries were made by Sony (ha, another negative Sony story!) and were shipped between April 1, 2004, and July 18, 2006. Ouch! The article mentions XTS, but I’ll bet they mean XPS and that means my XPS Gen 2 will most likely be affected. What a pain.

More of my thoughts and XPS Gen 2 pain here.

It’s interesting that the Dell website’s example pictures for effected batteries has “Made in Japan” markings rather than made in Thailand or China. It makes me wonder exactly where these millions of Sony manufactured batteries were produced.

It would be really surprising (and sad) if they were all indeed made in Japan.

Dell Knew About Battery Problems for Years

As everyone is aware, Dell has recalled over 4.1 million batteries in it’s laptops because some of these batteries have caught on fire. But an article on Consumeraffairs.com says that Dell knew about the problem for over two years. A former techn…

Even before they started catching fire I was having major problems with my Dell laptop battery. I just bought a replacement battery from http://www.laptopsforless.com/laptopbattery and it has worked out perfect for me. It works better than the original ever did and now I don’t have to worry about it catching fire, plus it was way more affordable going through the manufacturer (unless of course yours is covered under warranty).

Dell, Sony Discussed Battery Issues 10 Months Ago

Michael Santo of RealTechNews writes: Last year the big winner (or loser) debacle-wise, was Sony, for its DRM issues. This year (so far) it’s… hey, Sony again! (with Dell), for the recall of 4.1 million laptop batteries. As I previously wrote, there…
