Future iMac Design from Adam Benton

By Alice Hill
RealTechNews

Why can’t we start seeing computers look like this? I know Apple is always ahead on design, but it is a shame that this won’t be hitting shelves this fall.

The concept is from illustrator/designer Adam Benton aka Kromekat.

That’s perfect for the Mac user on a budget… with a full-time cleaning staff.

  2. Jim Frost says:

Not technologically feasible right now. Where’s the monitor’s light come from?

Even ignoring practical concerns like the lack of CD/DVD drive, making it kind of hard to install almost ever commercial software package.

Looks cool, but so does the contact lens on the back page of the last Wired.

Yeah…just wish people can hurry up and figure this stuff out.

No CD? Heck, it doesn’t even have a power cord! Presumably it’s getting Power Over Wireless Ethernet.

The back panel is a CD drive.

  6. Scott says:

One question: Do you really want people on the other side of your monitor to see what you are working on? I can tell you most companies would not want this for security reasons.
As far as the lack of power cord, there actually is a company that makes a product that transmits power wirelessly. I saw the product in action at the Semicon West trade show in San Francisco a month ago. I would not have believed it otherwise. It doesn’t transmit a huge distance, but it will at least go through the thickness of a wall. Pretty amazing stuff.

CD drive? You do mean SuperDrive don’t you? Where is the built-in iSight camera? How is it powered? Self-contained miniature nuclear reactor?

  8. Jason says:

Wireless Power?? Did someone dust of that Telsa patent library?

Looks like mini mac computational power levels at best. But at high end mac pro prices? Doesn’t seem feasible.

  9. Andrew says:

Ah, the inevitable buttonless keyboard! Where art thou? No more dusting and no range issues encountered (unlike that laser keyboard out there)… I look forward to it. And yeah, the backlit design of the keyboard looks killer.

  10. C. H. says:

There is no reason for a transparent or translucent monitor. What practical purpose does it serve?

    August 9th, 2006 at 9:12 pm

  11. Alex says:

With a translucent display, you could see “them” sneaking up on you… Pardon me, I have to adjust the aluminum foil on my strainer hat.

  12. David Langdon says:

Scott, were they asking for investors/cash at the wireless power demo? What were they powering wirelessly? I’m highly skeptical, but willing to be convinced.

As for the Mac, it looks gorgeous, but I have doubts about the balancing… I suppose size-wise it’s feasible, if you go back a gneration or two in chip families to get something small/low power enough.

Then agan, these concept art shots occupy the same niche that dresses at fashion shows do (or concept cars at auto shows); not meant to show actual use, but to illustrate trends/ stimulate ideas.

How will I read RealTechNews at the office where my boss can see me slacking through the clear monitor? Or where I can see my boss slacking ….. or read someone’s mail … or IM chats … or bank statements … or medical records … although you do look “hip” with your clear mac.

uhm, i like the desing, but its a bit imposible, in technologically means… i mean where are the input devices… optical drive, usb, firewire… man, i guess there are people like me who wants any ever posible form of conectivity into their computer, second.. the power? how its suposed to get power from? and the display… do i ever want someone get noticed when im watching porno movies at the work? lol.

this new imac concept design is really great. it really reflects what the future would be: wireless and translucent engineering feats!

the only thing that hinders it to be on production is that technology could hardly catch with design. but who knows? adam benton has already given us a sneak peek of the future of technology.

i believe it can be done!

well, cd drives are too jurassic. hey, let’s drop stuff bound for obsolence–having a cd drive in the imac would be an insult to mr. benton’s genius… :)

  18. jos says:

It’s an OK concept at best. There obviously wasn’t too much thought put into it with the missing power cord and CD drive. Another detail: the “ergonomic” keyboard is shaped totally wrong. It should be curved the OTHER direction.
I can imagine typing with that keyboard and getting carpal tunnel in one day.

Hello everyone. this computer does have an optical cd dvd drive. I saw another picture of it and it is behind the screen. And if you don’t beleive me just click this link. http://static.flickr.com/35/211194374_255d71b476_m.jpg

Also I wouldnt want people to see what I was doing on my computer from in front of me. Thats just stupid, I like some privacy.

  21. Computer Freak says:

Well, the technology seems great, but like everybody says, wheres the power cord, the inputs, and what is the white thing coming down middle of the monitor? If its projecting light, the light from the monitor will intercept the light from illuminations in the compact, creating an (invisible screen).

  22. John says:

Well…i think the design is sweet and is a productive thought. Some of the issues you seem to bring up aren’t hard. So, put a keyboard that is reversed, not hard to do. Add a power cord, not hard to do. Frost the back side of the glass, NOT HARD TO DO! I think this is great design and i have shown many people these pictures and instantly they say they would buy it. Seems like a top seller to me! Why not use it? With a couple tweeks, this computer could be incredible! I would like to have that sitting on my desk!

    October 10th, 2007 at 4:37 pm

  23. Steve says:

I do agree with John, this design could use a couple of finishing touches. I would actually put some stuff in the keyboard, but leave it transparent. I would also leave a MagSafe, so you know, the whole computer doesn’t shut off when your kid trips over the cord. One more thing, it i so thin that there could be a thin Super Drive added so you can at least put some CDs and upgrade the OS. I would love to make a computer like this one, except with a CD drive, a MagSafe and a fully working wireless transparent keyboard.

white people are always so ignorant gosh…
at last an idian kid like myself has to make a concept into a hopeful reality that it does have a superdrive for ur cd’s and dvds and w/e to come

  25. Bernard says:

This design, although extremely aesthetically pleasing, would be extremely expensive. Apple computers are known for being somewhat expensive (Yes, I said somewhat. Try building a computer of equal power on a well-known company’s site, like HP. You will find a ~15% price difference). However, this computer would obviously be completely wireless, with a highly sophisticated monitor.
The keyboard would be an appearance thing.
The monitor, dear C.H., would be of great importance to a graphic designer. If you could skip the scanning process and just slip your sketch into the back of your monitor, you would save time. Often in the graphic design business a project will be asked to be completed by yesterday, every second counts.
Not to mention I’m sure if this was designed there would be a way to cause the back to become opaque.
Either way, it is a very stylish design.

  26. Rod says:

I like it. Now how about creating a computer that doesn’t need a monitor at all. Like that movie Paycheck. Just holographic images that appear in front of you. Security, schmerity… most office peons are sequestered into cubicles anyway. Besides that, do you really think Big Brother can’t already monitor your every keystroke? Ha.
