Protect your PC using industry-strength security software. Cost = FREE!

A study released last December by AOL and the National Cyber Security Alliance found that 81% of home PCs lack at least one of the three critical protections — updated computer virus software, spyware protection, and a secure firewall — necessary to help guard against viruses, spyware, hackers, and other threats. More than half (56%) of the participants either had no anti-virus protection or had not updated it within the last week, almost half (44%) did not have a properly-configured firewall, and four in ten (38%) lacked spyware protection.

Yet, despite these findings, the large majority of users (83%) falsely believed that they were safe from online threats.

We believe having to pay subscriptions for security software contributed greatly to these statistics. Now, thanks to AOL, PC users worldwide can protect themselves with the latest industry-strength anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-phishing and firewall at no cost, no obligation, and no AOL membership required.

Is your PC protected with the latest anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-phishing and firewall?

If it is not protected because you do not want to pay for them, now you have no excuse.

There have always been good free AV apps that people could use … and based on AOL’s big goof last night (with search data), I’d prefer to use Avast! or AVG or Antivir.

Why load AOL garbage on your system when there’s AVG (free antivirus) and free firewalls like Comodo and Kerio? Installing these programs in conjunction with things like Spybot S&D, AdAware etc., then making sure that you’re current with Windows Update makes using AOL a waste of time.

Oh yeah, it doesn’t hurt to use Firefox and Thunderbird instead of Internet Explorer and Outlook Express respectively.

I do all of this and haven’t had any malware installed or otherwise been hacked into.

I’m definitely going to give Active Virus Protection a go. It’s basically Kaspersky AV with a slightly modified GUI. Kaspersky’s already my #1 reccomended AV program, but it’s also the most expensive AV app out there. I just hope this doesn’t come with a bunch of bundled AOL junk (though, knowing AOL, it probably does).

I wish the AOL stuff worked; I’ve had too many of my friend’s laptops brought over for virus cleaning even though they have the AOL software. It’s much easier to use Avast than a memory hog that doesn’t work.
