Microsoft to Automatically Push IE 7 to Users

By Jimmy Daniels

When IE 7 becomes available later this year, Microsoft is planning on pushing it out to users, although you will get a chance to say no. It will be delivered as a high priority update.

IE 7 will be delivered in the fourth quarter as a “high priority” update via Automatic Updates in Windows XP, Gary Schare, Microsoft’s director of IE product management, said in an interview Tuesday. Automatic Updates is a Windows feature typically used for security updates, but Microsoft has also used it to push its ant piracy tool WGA Notifications.

“The justification, of course, is the significant security enhancements in IE 7,” Schare said. Microsoft recommends that all Windows users install the new browser when it ships, he added.

Although IE 7 will be pushed out over Automatic Updates, people will be able to choose whether they want to install it or not, Schare said. Automatic Updates will first notify people when IE 7 is ready to install and then show a welcome screen that presents key features and the choices to install, not install or postpone installation. We Say: I’m sure there will be a lot of complaining about this, even if IE is better, I myself have not tried it yet. Any early adopters have any opinions they want to share?

And it just so happens to help MS maintain it’s dominance in the browser market - how convenient….

While a newer better more secure IE is welcome, the only IE security update I’m interested in is the one that adds the “Remove IE” option to my Add/Remove Programs list.

It’s pretty good, better than FireFox at this point.

I’ve been using IE7 since the first Beta - and am using it now. I have also used FireFox, and I find it too slow and unresponsive, especially with many large pages open. IE7 is much quicker and I have not encountered any problems so far.

They can push whatever they want, I have turned on high security, removed ability to execute activeX/activescript automatically and prevent it from automatically loading images. I them removed/hid all icons to this castrated IE and put Mozilla icons where it is convenient. Sure Microsoft, go ahead and deploy your trash, it’ll get castrated like all other IEs and hidden under a rock.

I like it. Been using it since January, certainly an improvement. I also use FireFox. I find I use IE7 substancially more. Have not had any problems.

It always surprises me how passionate and prejudice people can get about web browsers.

I use both Firefox and IE, I’m now running the Vista beta with IE7(+), and have found that the I’m using IE a lot more.

Both browsers have issues, but with IE7, Microsoft has done a lot to reduce security risks. Also, on Vista, IE7+ runs in a sandbox making it theoretically a whole lot safer. I just hope that a developer community grows around the IE add-ons similar to the community that grew around Firefox extensions…. maybe thats too much to hope for.

Firefox probably should have some work done on its UI in future revision, I know there are skins, but as far as I can tell they don’t allow the transparency that would blend Firefox in with Vista and stop it looking dated.

Of course there is always Opera as another alternative :)

I like it better than FF, but the bottom line is that it’s just a lot better than IE6 (of course, pretty much everything is at this point).

I used the IE7 beta for a while and found it would not allow me to customize the security settings to suit me. It was set up to protect a 5-year-old, not a sophisticated user and, at that point, would not accept changes I attempted to make to its settings. I wrote a scathing review of such idiocy for MS’s feedback and uninstalled it.

The absolute last thing I want is a browser which is going to give MS the power to decide what I can see and do on the web without giving me the option to turn it off.

I agree w/ achacha and Betty.
MS has to write software for stupid / apathetic users.
A Linux desktop running Windows in a VM is looking better and better all the time.
Also, online banks and vendors who require IEx do not get my business.
