Monopoly Ditches Play-Dough for Credit

By Michael Santo
Contributing Writer, RealTechNews

Blasphemy! Instead of faux paper money, new Monopoly games are going to use faux credit cards and an electronic banking system.

Parker Brothers is phasing out the cash-based version’s funmoney and replacing it with an “Electronic Banking” flavor that could leave Mr. Moneybags turning his pockets inside out as his stash is replaced by a magnetic strip. New kits are completely devoid of the famous multi-colored bills; instead, you’ll find phoney Visa debit cards and a calculator / reader which keeps a running tabulation of your riches — or lack thereof. We Say: What’s next? Are they going to get rid of the race car and the little dog? :-(

I seriously thought the only people who play Monopoly were only doing it for the nostalgia.

This is sad. Gone are the days of kids learning math through Monolopy money. Gone are the days of trash talking your friends while you fan out your money - reveling in the stack of cash. Technology - Making things easier for not necessarily for the better.

So do I foreclose on Ventor to buy gas for the little car?

No, they’re not replacing the car - but they ARE replacing the dog and the iron with a burger and a cell phone. Also, you don’t get 200 pounds for passing Go - now it’s 2,000,000 pounds, so I guess you can still afford the gas for the car!

They’re actually changing all the streets in this new version, but I’m not sure the old version is being phased out — an article a few days ago said that the old version will be available and called “Monopoly Classic”.

    Here’s to the Coke Effect.

So what about all the side pots from fines that you win when you land on free parking? Speed monopoly takes a dive… a sad, sad day.

How many people that do not like this idea, run out and grab the new video cards when they come out, or new cpus, etc? It is kind of funny when technology hits in a place you would least expect it, and the same people that LOVE new tech, hate this ;)

I thought they woudl have done an electronic version a LONG time ago for the newer generation.

    Mike

and why do I keep swapping letters around like woudl instead of would - do I have a disease? tech deficiency? monopoly envy? :)

Mike, there IS an electronic version of Monopoly, it’s been around since the 1980’s. They called it Microsoft.

The play money will be available for purchase using real money, but only for registered users–wouldn’t want anyone making bogus copies of that bogus money!
